Chapter 5 - Uncovering the Deceit

My home in Lake Forest was surrounded by tall oaks and maples whose red and gold leaves blanketed the wide front lawn. When we pulled into the driveway, Buster, my eight-year-old golden retriever, was already pressing his wet nose against the front bay window, his tail thumping rhythmically against the glass.
The moment we walked through the front door, Buster trotted over, his tail wagging with frantic joy. He didn't jump; he instinctively lowered his head, sniffing Owen’s worn teddy bear before giving Lily’s small hand a warm, sloppy lick. For the first time all day, a pure, unrestrained giggle burst from Lily’s lips. Owen reached out with hesitant fingers, sinking them into Buster's thick golden fur.
""He likes us,"" Owen whispered, his face lighting up with genuine wonder.
""He loves you,"" I said, hanging my military coat on the coat rack. ""Make yourselves at home. Buster will show you the living room while I get dinner started.""
While the kids settled onto the plush living room rug, captivated by Buster’s gentle affection and a warm platter of grilled cheese sandwiches, the front doorbell chimed.
I opened the door to reveal a tall, distinguished man in his late sixties with silver hair, wire-rimmed glasses, and a sharp charcoal wool overcoat. Arthur Pendelton, Richard Vance's personal and corporate attorney for over twenty-five years, stood on the porch with a briefcase in hand.
""Colonel Steel?"" Pendelton extended a firm hand. ""Thank God you called me. When Major Hayes briefed me on what happened at O'Hare, my hands were shaking with rage.""
""Come in, Arthur,"" I welcomed him into my private study, away from the living room.
Arthur sat down, setting his leather briefcase on the mahogany desk and pulling out a thick sheaf of legal documents. ""I brought the original Vance Family Trust documents. Richard established this fund eighteen months before his illness. He was an honorable man, Colonel. He came from working-class roots and built Vance Logistics with his bare hands. When his first wife passed, his children became his entire world.""
""Then explain this new will Evelyn produced,"" I said, leaning forward.
Arthur took a deep breath, his face hardening. ""Richard's cancer turned terminal very fast. In the last ten days of his life, he was under heavy palliative sedation at his home hospice suite. Evelyn dismissed the private medical team two days before he died and replaced them with private caretakers whom she paid directly in cash. On the day after his death, she presented a typed document bearing Richard's shaky signature, witnessed by her personal trainer and her cosmetic dermatologist, revoking the original trust and assigning full executorship and assets to her.""
""Did you challenge it?""
""I tried! But probate court in Cook County is heavily backlogged,"" Arthur explained frustration etched into every wrinkle on his forehead. ""Under Illinois law, unless an interested party with legal standing files a formal objection supported by prima facie evidence of fraud or undue influence, a properly formatted will enters probate. And because Lily and Owen are minors without a legal guardian, nobody had standing to file on their behalf! Evelyn had sole physical custody. She was effectively locking the courthouse door from the inside.""
""Until she threw them away at Gate 17,"" I countered.
""Precisely,"" Arthur's eyes flashed with legal triumph. ""By committing felony abandonment, the state has stripped her of physical custody. And with your emergency custody order, we can petition Judge Marian Caldwell on Monday morning to appoint a Guardian ad Litem for the children and immediately freeze all Vance estate accounts.""
""We need more than a freeze, Arthur,"" I said, tapping the desk. ""We need proof that Richard never signed that document. We need to bury Evelyn Vance so deeply in the legal system that she never breathes free air again.""
""Well, Colonel,"" Arthur smiled thinly, pulling a small flash drive from his vest pocket. ""Richard Vance wasn't a fool. Even while he was sick, he suspected his wife had married him for his wealth. Two days before he entered home hospice, he came to my office alone and recorded a video statement. Furthermore, he gave me the master access keys to his private safe deposit box at JPMorgan Chase. He told me that if anything happened to him and Evelyn tried to alter his wishes, I was to open that box.""
""What’s in the box?""
""The digital medical logs from his personal smartwatch,"" Arthur revealed. ""The watch tracked his biometric data, tremors, and cognitive heart-rate variations. If Evelyn claims he signed a complex five-page legal will on October 4th at 2:00 PM, Richard’s biometric data will prove whether he was even conscious at that hour.""

A slow smile spread across my face. In the military, we call that having the enemy caught in a crossfire.
""Arthur,"" I said, ""get your filings ready. On Monday morning, we aren't just defending these kids. We are going on the offensive.""
