Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in Cook County

Monday morning arrived under a gray, drizzling Chicago sky. The marble corridors of the Cook County Courthouse were packed with lawyers, litigants, and reporters. Evelyn Vance’s arrest at O'Hare had leaked to the press over the weekend; headline banners across local news networks blared: Billionaire Heiress Arrested at Gate 17 for Abandoning Twin Stepchildren.
When Major Hayes and I walked through the double oak doors of Courtroom 402, Arthur Pendelton was already seated at the petitioner's table. Lily and Owen were safely waiting in the private child advocacy chambers down the hall, accompanied by Caseworker Clara Higgins and an armed military liaison officer. I didn't want them anywhere near the vitriol that was about to unfold.
At the defense table sat Evelyn Vance.
She had posted a staggering two-million-dollar cash bail on Sunday night. Gone was the pristine cashmere coat; she wore a conservative navy designer suit meant to portray modesty, but her eyes were venomous. She sat flanked by three high-priced defense attorneys led by Jonathan Sterling, a notoriously ruthless probate litigator known for tearing family estates apart.
Judge Marian Caldwell, a woman in her sixties with silver hair and an iron reputation for zero tolerance, took the bench. The gavel struck with a sharp, echoing crack.
""Matter of the Vance Minors and the Estate of Richard Vance,"" Judge Caldwell announced, adjusting her spectacles. ""We are here to resolve emergency custody placement and consider the emergency petition to freeze estate assets filed by petitioner Arthur Pendelton.""
Jonathan Sterling stood up immediately, projecting smooth confidence. ""Your Honor, this entire proceeding is an outrageous abuse of state power. My client, Mrs. Evelyn Vance, was suffering from acute post-bereavement stress and temporary psychological disassociation when she mistakenly boarded that aircraft at O'Hare. She believed the children’s private nanny was directly behind her. It was a tragic, honest miscommunication.""
I almost laughed out loud at the sheer audacity of the lie.
""Furthermore,"" Sterling pressed on, pointing an accusing finger toward our table, ""the individual currently holding these children, Colonel Thomas Steel, is a total stranger! He has no legal standing, no familial relation, and no right to interfere in the affairs of the Vance family. Mrs. Vance is the legal surviving spouse and executor of Richard Vance’s estate under the valid will executed on October 4th. We demand the immediate return of the children to their legal guardian and the dismissal of these spurious claims!""
Judge Caldwell’s eyes narrowed. ""Mr. Sterling, your client was caught on gate security footage walking away from two five-year-olds without looking back, and she made direct statements to arresting officers that she had no legal obligation to raise them. Do not test my intelligence.""
She turned her gaze to our table. ""Mr. Pendelton, what do you have to say?""
Arthur stood up smoothly, buttoning his suit jacket. ""Your Honor, we are prepared to present conclusive, irrefutable digital evidence that the will presented by Evelyn Vance is an absolute forgery.""
Evelyn visibly stiffened. Her lead attorney frowned, leaning in to whisper to her.
""What evidence?"" Judge Caldwell demanded.
Arthur approached the bench, handing copies to the bailiff. ""We have the forensic extraction from Richard Vance’s personal biometric medical monitor, authenticated by Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s Chief of Neurology. At the time this purported will was signed, Richard Vance was completely unconscious under heavy medical sedation. Furthermore, we have subpoenaed the server logs from Vance Logistics. On October 12th—four days after Richard’s death—Mrs. Vance accessed the company's autopen digital signature archive from her home IP address and generated Richard's signature onto that document.""
Evelyn’s face turned an ashen shade of chalk. ""That's a lie!"" she shrieked, losing her composure and standing up. ""He signed it! He hated those children! He wanted me to have everything!""
""Sit down, Mrs. Vance!"" Judge Caldwell banged her gavel with thunderous fury. ""One more outburst and you will be held in criminal contempt!""
Sterling tried desperately to pull Evelyn back into her chair, but the damage was done. The air in the courtroom was suffocating.

""There is more, Your Honor,"" Arthur said calmly. ""Before he died, Richard Vance recorded a video deposition with my office, specifically anticipating that his wife might attempt to defraud his children. We request permission to play the file for the court.""
Judge Caldwell nodded curtly. ""Proceed.""
