Chapter 8 - The Fall of an Empire

Don't do it, Salvatore, Don Moretti said, his voice flat, dry, and decisive. If you draw that weapon, your entire bloodline is wiped from the city records before dawn. Sit down.
Sal froze. His chest heaved as he realized the room had turned completely against him. The sixteen men he brought into the hotel did not move; they were professionals, and professionals do not commit suicide for a dead boss.
Fourteen years, Gabe said, closing the distance until he stood barely two feet from Sal. You held my hand at my father's wake. You told me you would teach me how to be a man. You gave me his cufflinks, thinking the secret died with Arthur Quinn.
He wasn't supposed to live! Sal snarled, dropping all pretense of innocence as his eyes flared with bitter, cornered hatred. Enzo was dragging us into the grave with his pathetic rules! No drugs, no extortion on local shops, no expansion! We were sitting on a billion-dollar corridor, and he was acting like a parish priest! I made this family rich, Gabe! I made you rich!
You made us thieves, Gabe corrected with chilling calm. My father built a community that respected him. You built a network of terrified beggars.
Gabe turned toward Don Moretti and the seated council.
The Santoro assets return to their rightful owner tonight. The shipping ports, the labor union oversight, and the downtown real estate. In exchange, the narcotics corridors through Little Italy are permanently shut down. If a single pill or bag crosses 18th Street, my men will burn the distributor’s warehouse to the ground. Do the Five Families accept the Santoro succession?
Moretti stood slowly, followed by Lucchese and Bianchi.
We accept Gabriel Santoro as the head of the Santoro family, Moretti announced, his voice carrying the finality of an ancient law. And what is your judgment on Salvatore Ferraro?
Gabe looked at the man who had stolen his youth, his parents, and his peace.
A bullet is too quick for fourteen years of treason, Gabe said quietly. Take his rings. Take his money, his cars, his penthouses, and his offshore accounts. Every dime he accumulated since my father’s death goes into a medical trust for the shopkeepers, the widows, and the families he ruined—starting with Arthur Quinn. Then drop him off at the Cook County Sheriff's office with the audio tapes and the federal ledgers. Let him spend the rest of his natural life in a six-by-eight concrete box, listening to his own voice.
No! Sal screamed, lunging across the table toward Gabe with clawed fingers. Shoot me, you coward! Put a bullet in me like a real boss!
Tommy stepped forward, delivering a brutal, concussive strike with the butt of his sidearm to the side of Sal's jaw. Sal collapsed onto the rich carpet, groaning in the spilled espresso, bleeding onto the floorboards he had once commanded.

Get him out of my sight, Gabe ordered without looking back down.
The ballroom doors opened, and two federal marshals, escorted by Gabe's personal lawyers who had been waiting in the hallway with the verified evidence, stepped inside to snap steel cuffs around Sal's wrists. The reign of fear that had choked the neighborhood for a decade and a half ended not with an explosion of street violence, but with the quiet, devastating click of an iron lock.
