Chapter 6 - Blood and Ink

The dining room had turned into a courtroom, and Richard was receiving his sentence.

Clara stood up slowly, leaning heavily on her silver-tipped cane. She looked at her eldest son, the boy she had spoiled and defended for decades, and for the first time in her life, her eyes held nothing but profound disgust.

“Clara... Mother, please,” Richard begged, crawling toward her on his knees, reaching out for the hem of her dress. “You know Emily is exaggerating! She’s vindictive! You can’t turn your back on me!”

Clara pulled her dress back, refusing to let his hands touch the fabric. “You tried to steal a baby from its mother, Richard,” she said, her voice trembling with heartbreak and fury. “You disgraced our name. You disgraced your father's memory. And worst of all, you spent twenty-three years looking at your own son—my grandson—and treating him like a stranger out of pure spite.”

“Mother—”

“Don't call me that,” Clara said coldly, turning toward Noah. Her wrinkled face softened, tears spilling into the deep lines around her eyes. She reached out and placed a trembling hand against Noah’s cheek. “Noah... my sweet boy. All those years, I wondered why your father kept you at arm's length. I thought it was his work. I thought he was just cold. If I had known... oh God, if I had known what he tried to do to you...”

“It’s okay, Grandma,” Noah said gently, wrapping his arms around her frail shoulders. “Mom protected me. I had everything I ever needed because of her.”

Vanessa slowly dragged herself up from the floor, leaning against the wall, her mascara running in black streaks down her cheeks. The arrogance had entirely peeled away, exposing the raw, desperate opportunist underneath.

“Richard, we have to go,” Vanessa whispered urgently, grabbing his shoulder. “Get up! We need to call my lawyer! We need to get to the bank before the morning orders go through!”

“Didn't you hear her, you idiot?” Richard suddenly snarled, swatting Vanessa’s hands away with violent disgust. “There is no money! The accounts are frozen! You lied to me for twenty-three years! You took my money and laughed at me behind my back!”

“I gave you a son!” Vanessa shrieked back, her face contorting with venom. “You wanted an heir, and you were too pathetic to keep your own marriage together! Don't you dare act like you’re the victim here, Richard! You came to me! You planned the swap! You paid the orderly!”

“Enough!” Thomas barked, stepping forward with his phone already pressed to his ear. “I’m calling local security to escort both of you off the property before this turns into a physical brawl.”

“No need, Thomas,” I intervened, checking my watch once more. “I already called the local precinct twenty minutes before dinner started. They’ve been waiting down the driveway for the signal.”

Right on cue, twin flashes of red and blue light began sweeping rhythmically across the sheer curtains of the grand dining room windows. The low rumble of police cruisers idling in the gravel driveway vibrated through the floorboards.

Vanessa let out a strangled shriek and bolted toward the patio doors, but the heavy glass was locked tight.

Heavy, authoritative footsteps echoed on the front porch, followed by three sharp, loud raps against the front door.

“That will be Detective Miller and the agents from the State Financial Crimes Division,” I said, picking up the master file from the table. “Richard, you wanted an audience tonight. You wanted to make a grand announcement in front of the people who mattered most. Well... your audience has arrived.”
