Chapter 3 - The Mistress Arrives

The front door chimed with a crisp, cheerful ring that cut through the heavy silence of the dining room.
Richard froze. His head jerked toward the foyer like a startled animal. The look of sheer panic that washed over his face told me everything. He hadn't just planned to confess to our family; he had scheduled an audience.
“Are you expecting someone, Richard?” I asked, smoothing the front of my silk dress as I walked toward the front hallway.
“Emily, don't—stop!” Richard shouted, scrambling out of his seat and nearly tripping over the edge of the oriental rug. “Don't answer that!”
I ignored him, my heels clicking methodically on the hardwood floor. Through the frosted glass panels of the front entrance, I could see the silhouette of a woman dressed in a dramatic crimson evening coat, her posture poised, clutching an oversized designer clutch.
I turned the brass deadbolt and pulled the heavy oak door wide open.
Vanessa Cole stood on our porch, a triumphant, gloating smirk plastered across her heavily contoured face. She had spent the last two hours expecting a text message confirming that Emily Bennett had suffered a complete nervous breakdown. She was dressed for a funeral—my funeral.
“Good evening, Emily,” Vanessa purred, stepping forward without an invitation. She adjusted her diamond earrings and looked me up and down with theatrical pity. “I imagine Richard has finally told you the truth. It must be simply devastating for you. But you really shouldn't blame him. Some bonds are just too strong to be broken by a boring marriage.”
“Please, come inside, Vanessa,” I said warmly, stepping aside and gesturing toward the dining room. “You’re right on time. We were just discussing family history.”
Vanessa paused, momentarily thrown off by my pleasant smile and relaxed posture. She had clearly rehearsed this moment for years, anticipating screaming matches, tears, or a frantic physical confrontation. Finding an impeccably composed woman inviting her inside like an honored guest cracked her smug facade for a split second.
She swept into the foyer, her expensive perfume filling the corridor. “Well, I’m glad you’re being practical about this. Richard and I have wasted twenty-three years hiding. We’re taking Liam to the Hamptons tomorrow, and we expect you to sign the uncontested settlement documents by morning.”
“Why don't you tell that to the room?” I suggested, walking behind her.
Vanessa stepped into the grand dining room, chin tilted high, ready to conquer the Bennett family. “Clara, Thomas,” she began smoothly. “I know this must be a shock to all of you, but the truth had to come out eventually. Noah isn't who you think he is, and Richard has suffered enough trying to keep Emily’s world intact—”
She stopped mid-sentence.
Richard was slumped against the wall, clutching his chest, his face pale and drenched in sweat. His tie was pulled loose, and he was staring at Vanessa with absolute, unbridled fury.
“Shut up, Vanessa,” Richard rasped, his voice raw.
Vanessa blinked in bewilderment. “Richard? What's wrong with you? Stand up! This is the moment we’ve been waiting for! The fraud is out in the open! She raised my boy, and now we take everything back!”
A dry, bitter laugh echoed from the corner of the table. Thomas leaned back, crossing his arms. “You really are a piece of work, aren't you? Tell me, Vanessa, how much did my brother pay you last year to take care of 'his' son?”
Vanessa’s eyes darted between Thomas and Richard, sensing a shift in the air that she hadn't anticipated. “What are you talking about? Richard supported his own son, as any decent father would!”
“Except it wasn't his son he was hiding from me,” I said, stepping into the center of the room. I picked up the folder and held it up. “It was his son you were raising. All by yourself. With his money.”
Vanessa froze. The haughty smirk vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, predatory alarm. Her grip on her designer clutch tightened until her knuckles turned white.
“What did you say?” Vanessa whispered.
“I know about St. Jude’s, Vanessa,” I said evenly. “I’ve known since the morning after we gave birth. I know Nurse Evelyn caught the swap. I know Marcus Hayes spilled his guts to security. And I know you received the corrected discharge paperwork three days later when you walked out of that hospital holding Liam.”
Richard surged forward, his face turning an angry shade of purple as he pointed an accusing finger at his mistress. “You knew! You knew the whole time! You swore to me Liam was Emily’s baby! You looked me in the eye and said you were breaking your heart every day raising another woman's child!”
Vanessa backed away, the realization washing over her like ice water. The twenty-three-year con that had funded her multi-million-dollar lifestyle had just exploded in front of everyone.
“Richard, calm down, she's lying!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice losing all of its polished refinement. “She's playing mind games! She forged those papers!”
“They’re state-certified, Vanessa,” Noah said, stepping out from the shadows of the fireplace. At six-foot-two, with his mother’s sharp cheekbones and Richard’s unmistakable jawline, the resemblance was undeniable. He stood tall, looking down at the woman who had spent his entire life leeching off his father's betrayal. “And I took a certified DNA test three weeks ago. Mom gave me the records. I am one hundred percent Richard Bennett's biological son.”
Vanessa took another step backward, her back hitting the edge of the dining sideboard. The china rattled loudly in the silence that followed.

“You drained me,” Richard whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of horror and pure hatred. “Every month. College tuition. Luxury condos. Sports cars. You told me it was guilt money for raising Emily’s baby! You bled my business dry!”
“And speaking of your business,” I chimed in, pulling out my phone and checking the time. “The banks officially closed thirty minutes ago. Which means the formal foreclosure notices have just been served at your corporate headquarters.”
