Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

The steel vault door clicked open, and the bright light of the hallway spilled in. Luciano stood in the doorway, his white dress shirt stained with dirt and a smear of dark blood across his shoulder, his hair ruffled by the wind. But his eyes were clear, fierce, and entirely alive as they locked onto mine.

He didn't say a word. He simply crossed the room in three long strides, grabbed me by the waist, and pulled me against his chest so hard I could feel the frantic, heavy thudding of his heart.

"What were you thinking?" he demanded, his voice thick with a mixture of raw terror and fury as he buried his face in my hair. "I told you to stay in the vault!"

"I saved your life, you arrogant jerk," I whispered fiercely against his shoulder, my arms wrapping tightly around his neck. "If I hadn't tripped the floodlights, Julian's sniper would have had a clean shot at your back."

Luciano pulled back just enough to look down at me, a breathless, incredulous laugh breaking through his hardened expression. He cupped my face in his hands, his thumbs tracing my cheekbones. "You are the most dangerous mistake I have ever made, Maeve Calloway."

"Where is Julian?" I asked, my voice steadying.

"Rocco has him tied up in the basement," Luciano said coldly, the ice returning to his winter-gray eyes for a fraction of a second before softening as he looked back at me. "The police are on their way—Vance and his unit, called by my own lawyers. By morning, the Falcone syndicate will be dismantled, leaderless, and permanently buried."

I let out a long, shuddering breath, the weight of the past week finally lifting off my shoulders. The war was over. The nightmare that had started with a wrong keycard and a cardboard coffee sleeve was finally coming to a close.

"And us?" I whispered, looking up into his face. "What happens to the fake fiancée now?"

May you like

Luciano smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached all the way to his eyes, wiping away every shadow of the mafia boss and leaving only the man who had chosen to shelter me.

"There was never anything fake about it, Maeve," he murmured, pressing his lips softly to mine. "Now, come on. Let's go show the police my new bride."
