Chapter 1 - The Ring of the Law

The gold badge flashed under the harsh hallway lights, held up by Detective Marcus Vance, a man whose tailored suit couldn't hide the bruising exhaustion in his eyes. Behind him stood Detective Miller, a younger officer with a nervous twitch in his jaw, holding a heavy metal clipboard. My bare feet curled against the plush carpet as I clutched the white down duvet tighter around my shoulders, my heart drumming a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

Luciano Castellani didn't flinch. He stood three paces away from the bed, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his cuffs turned back with deliberate slowness. He looked less like a cornered mafia boss and more like a CEO who had just been interrupted during a high-stakes board meeting. The air in the luxury suite was thick with the lingering scent of sandalwood, expensive whiskey, and the sharp, metallic tang of the police presence that had just shattered our fragile morning.

"Mr. Castellani," Detective Vance said, his voice gravelly and dripping with professional skepticism. "We have reason to believe you were out of this room during the early hours. Specifically around three-twelve in the morning. Care to explain your whereabouts?"

Luciano let out a low, slow breath, turning his winter-gray eyes toward the detective. There was no panic in his posture, no defensive twitch. He moved with the terrifying grace of a predator who knew he owned the cage. "I am always where I need to be, Detective. And at three-twelve this morning, I was profoundly occupied."

Vance’s gaze darted past Luciano’s shoulder, locking directly onto me where I sat shivering against the massive mahogany headboard. The look in the detective's eyes was sharp, analytical, stripping away my dignity piece by piece.

"Is that right, miss?" Vance asked, taking a step forward into the room. "And who might you be? Your name isn't on the registration for Suite 1007."

My throat felt like sandpaper. Every instinct screamed at me to tell the truth—to blurt out that I had walked into the wrong room, that I was an exhausted event planner who didn't even know this man ten minutes ago, that I had been sleeping alone until cold steel woke me up. But the heavy weight of Luciano’s warning pressed down on my chest like an anvil. Cross me, and that mistaken keycard will be the least of your problems.

I swallowed hard, forcing my voice to steady despite the trembling in my hands. "My name is Maeve Calloway," I said, praying my voice didn't crack. "And... and Mr. Castellani didn't leave this bed."

Miller stepped up beside Vance, his eyebrows shooting up toward his hairline. "A civilian in the Castellani suite? That's quite a coincidence, considering Vito Falcone was found execution-style two floors down less than an hour ago."

"Coincidences are for amateurs, Detective," Luciano said smoothly, closing the distance between himself and the bed with two long strides. He sat down on the edge of the mattress, the springs groaning softly under his weight. Before I could flinch away, his warm, heavy hand settled familiarly over my bare hip beneath the duvet, burning right through the fabric. "As you can see, Ms. Calloway and I were engaged in matters far more pressing than neighborhood politics."

Vance’s eyes narrowed to slits as he stared at Luciano’s hand on my body. The silence in the room stretched until it felt like a taut wire ready to snap. I could feel the heat radiating from Luciano’s skin, a stark contrast to the ice in his veins. If they didn't buy this, if Vance saw through the charade, we were both heading for a dark cell—or worse, a shallow grave in the Illinois mud.
