Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The department suspended Grant for six months without pay, stripping him of his captain’s bars and reassigning him to administrative duties pending remediation. The news leaked to the press within hours.

Sadie Mercer’s social standing took an immediate beating. The narrative shifted from a glamorous high-rise rescue to an unethical display of favoritism that nearly killed a pregnant woman and an elderly veteran.

Two days after the hearing, I returned to my Lincoln Park home with two professional movers. I had leased a sunlit two-bedroom condo in Evanston, close to the hospital and far from Grant’s firehouse.

As the movers loaded the final boxes of nursery furniture into the truck, a sleek silver sports car pulled up to the curb.

Sadie stepped out, wearing oversized sunglasses and a trench coat. She hurried up the front steps before Julian could block her path.

"Lauren, please," Sadie said, pulling off her glasses to reveal red, swollen eyes. "We need to talk."

"You have five seconds before I call the police," Julian warned, stepping onto the porch.

"Let her speak, Julian," I said, leaning against the doorframe, crossing my arms over my belly. "I want to hear what she has to say."

Sadie swallowed hard, clutching her designer leather bag against her stomach like a shield. "You’re ruining his life, Lauren. Grant lives for the department. Being captain is everything he is."

"He ruined his own life, Sadie," I replied evenly. "He made a choice in that elevator."

"He chose me because I was vulnerable!" she cried out, her voice rising in hysteria. "He has always had a hero complex! That’s why he married you, because you were so quiet and needed someone strong to protect you!"

I let out a soft, bitter laugh. "Is that what you tell yourself?"

"He still loves me," Sadie hissed, the mask of polite regret dropping completely. "He told me three months ago he still thinks about what we could have been. You’re just the safe option he settled for when I left for Europe."

"Then keep him," I said, holding her gaze without blinking. "Take him. He’s all yours, Sadie."

She blinked, stunned by my total lack of resistance. She had come expecting a screaming match, expecting a fight for a man's heart.

"You... you’re just giving him up?" she stammered.

"He gave me up the moment he walked out of that elevator," I replied, pointing down the steps toward her car. "Take the broken man who threw away his family for your screams. See how long you can live with the guilt when he looks at you and remembers the daughter he lost."

Sadie took a step back, her face turning as white as paper. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

She turned and practically ran down the stone steps, jumping into her car and speeding away into the afternoon traffic.

As the exhaust cleared, a sudden, sharp pain tore through my lower abdomen. I gasped, grabbing the railing as my knees buckled.

"Julian," I groaned, water soaking through the fabric of my dress. "The baby."
