Chapter 7 - The Severed Cable

The sound was unlike anything Hazel had ever heard—a sharp, violent report like a rifle shot fired directly above them.

The elevator dropped another four feet with horrifying, unmitigated speed. Hazel screamed as her body was lifted momentarily into the air before slamming back down onto the reinforced carpet. Gerald’s pot slid violently across the floor, crashing against the mirrored wall with a sickening crack.

Adrien lunged across the floor, throwing his body over Hazel’s as a shower of twisted metal debris and shattered ceiling panels came crashing down around them. His arms locked around her shoulders, shielding her head from the falling debris. The car rocked violently from side to side, swaying like a pendulum inside the concrete shaft before the secondary safety clamps bit into the guide rails with a deafening, sparks-flying roar that vibrated through their teeth.

Then, silence returned. Heavy, suffocating, and terrifyingly fragile.

Hazel gasped for air, coughing against the thick cloud of pulverized concrete dust. Adrien slowly lifted his weight off her, his breath coming in ragged bursts. A thin line of crimson was trickling down his right temple where a piece of the aluminum light housing had clipped his skin.

""Adrien!"" Hazel grabbed the cuff of her sleeve, pressing it against his forehead to stem the bleeding. ""You're hit.""

""I'm fine,"" he coughed, waving her hand away gently. ""One of the secondary hoist cables just snapped. The counterweight must have sheared its mounting brackets when the building's structural frame flexed in the storm winds.""

He looked upward. In the pale beam of Hazel's phone, which had miraculously survived the drop, they could see the jagged opening in the ceiling where the access hatch had buckled. Cool, howling air was pouring down through the gap, carrying a fine mist of snow directly into the car.

""The primary cable is holding,"" Adrien said, his voice grim as he studied the tension lines through the hole. ""But it's frayed at the drum. The friction brakes are the only thing keeping us from dropping to the sub-basement. If another cable gives way, the emergency dogs won't hold the kinetic load.""

""How much time do we have?"" Hazel asked, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

""Not much. Maybe an hour before the metal fatigues from the cold."" Adrien turned toward the floor. ""The cactus?""

Hazel scrambled on her hands and knees across the debris-strewn carpet. She found the blue pot near the back corner. The ceramic was cracked down the middle, held together only by the tightly packed soil and the tough, resilient roots inside. Gerald was completely intact, his spines standing rigid and unbroken.

Tears pricked Hazel’s eyes, but she blinked them back furiously. ""He made it.""

""He's like you,"" Adrien said softly, his voice thick with an emotion he could no longer hide. ""Stubbornly refusing to break under pressure.""

Hazel wiped the dust from her cheek, looking up at the gaping hole in the ceiling. ""There's an emergency ladder in the shaft, isn't there? The maintenance specs for this core—I remember reviewing the architectural depreciation schedules three years ago. There should be an iron ladder running alongside the counterweight track.""

Adrien looked at her, his eyes narrowing in calculation. ""There is. But the access door to the fourteenth-floor maintenance landing is twelve feet above our roof. With my arm... with the tremor coming back, I can't climb that ladder.""

""Then I will,"" Hazel said firmly.

""No. It's suicide, Hazel. The shaft is an ice chute right now. If your hands slip on the rungs, there's nothing below us but two hundred feet of empty air.""

""And if we stay here, we drop to the bottom when the last cable snaps!"" She grabbed his shoulders, forcing him to look at her. ""You risked everything you owned to keep me out of prison this morning, Adrien Sterling. You ruined your own board standing for a mid-level auditor who barely said good morning to you in the hallways. I am not going to sit here and watch you freeze to death because you're too proud to let me climb a ladder.""

Adrien stared at her, the blood still trickling down the side of his pale cheek. The corporate titan was gone; the calculating strategist had vanished. All that was left was a man looking at a woman who had seen his deepest flaws, his failing body, and his ruined empire, and had chosen to stand beside him anyway.

""There's a manual hoist release on the landing wall,"" he said quietly, his voice trembling slightly. ""A red lever marked Hydraulic Brake Override. If you can reach it and pull it downward, it locks the physical wedge into the elevator carriage from the outside. It will mechanically freeze this car to the structural steel beams, whether the cables snap or not.""

""Then boost me up,"" Hazel said, tying her hair back with a rubber band from her pocket. ""Right now.""
