Chapter 7 - The Freezing of the Empire

By two o'clock that afternoon, the shockwaves of the morning’s coup had completely paralyzed Ethan’s personal and professional life. While I sat in Vanguard’s executive suite reviewing emergency cash-flow reconciliations with Arthur Vance, Ethan was discovering the true, terrifying scope of institutional power.

He had rushed directly from headquarters to his primary bank branch downtown, intending to drain his personal checking accounts and execute an emergency wire transfer to his Cayman shell entity. But Arthur Vance moved faster than financial panic.

Backed by Dr. Evelyn Hall’s medical affidavits, Ethan’s fraudulent corporate filings, and our emergency family court petitions, Judge Patricia Alvarez of the County Superior Court had signed a comprehensive emergency freeze order at eleven-fifteen that morning. When Ethan slammed his black Centurion card onto the teller counter demanding two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in cashier’s checks, the branch manager politely informed him that all individual, joint, and corporate accounts bearing his Social Security number had been placed under strict judicial conservatorship.

Ethan had stood in the marble bank lobby, screaming profanities at the branch staff until two armed transit officers escorted him out into the rain.

Things were far worse for Sloane Mercer.

By three o'clock, forensic process servers accompanied by county sheriffs arrived at her luxury downtown high-rise. Because the lease and furnishing invoices had been directly traced to Vanguard’s embezzled operational funds, the court had issued an immediate writ of attachment. The sheriffs padlocked the front entrance, while an inventory team began cataloging the Hermès handbags, Cartier bracelets, and haute couture clothing purchased with company capital.

When Sloane arrived in an Uber—her corporate fuel card having been declined at a gas station thirty minutes prior—she found her personal belongings packed into three cardboard boxes sitting on the wet sidewalk. The building concierge refused her entry, informing her that her building access fob had been permanently deactivated.

Homeless, penniless, and publicly disgraced, Sloane did what parasitic narcissists always do when their host organism dies: she turned on Ethan with vicious, unbridled fury.

The confrontation took place on the front lawn of my house.

I was sitting in the nursery with Noah, listening to the gentle patter of rain against the windowpane while a private pediatric specialist monitored his vitals, when the screeching of tires echoed from the driveway below.

I looked through the sheer curtains. Ethan’s Tesla had been repossessed by Vanguard’s fleet management team an hour earlier, so he had arrived in a battered yellow taxi. Moments later, Sloane pulled up in another ride-share.

The screaming could be heard across the entire manicured neighborhood.

""You ruined my life, you pathetic coward!"" Sloane shrieked, hurling one of her cardboard boxes directly at Ethan’s chest. Designer scarves and silk blouses spilled across the wet asphalt. ""You swore she was powerless! You swore she was a brainless housewife who would roll over and take whatever pennies you offered her! You stole my career! You stole my reputation! The FBI is going to indict us because of your idiocy!""

Ethan looked utterly deranged. His tie was undone, his hair was soaked with rain, and his expensive suit was splattered with mud. ""Me?! You were the one who demanded the high-rise! You were the one who demanded the Cartier watches! You drained the accounts, you greedy bitch! I sacrificed my wife and my son for you!""

""You sacrificed them because you're weak!"" Sloane screamed back, her face contorted with pure hatred. ""You’re nothing without her! She built Vanguard, not you! You’re just an empty, mediocre suit with an overinflated ego! I hope you rot in federal prison!""

Neighbors were stepping out onto their porches, recording every second of the humiliating spectacle on their smartphones. Within two hours, videos of Vanguard’s disgraced former CEO brawling on his lawn with his terminated mistress were trending across local business forums and TikTok.

Downstairs, the front door rattled as Ethan pounded against the oak panels with his fists. ""Claire! Claire, please open the door! Let me see my son! Let me talk to you! It’s all a misunderstanding! Claire!""

I didn't even look toward the hallway.

Two burly private security guards stationed at the entrance stepped onto the porch. They didn't engage in an argument. They simply produced the signed temporary restraining order and informed Ethan that if he took one more step toward the threshold, he would spend the night in county holding for aggravated violation of a protective order.

Ethan collapsed onto the bottom step of the porch, soaking wet, clutching his head in his hands as Sloane’s taxi sped away into the gathering twilight. He had arrived thirty-six hours ago believing he owned the world. Now, he didn't even own the clothes on his back.
