Chapter 6 - The Clean Sweep

The atmosphere in the boardroom had shifted from stunned disbelief to absolute corporate carnage. Ethan’s hands were shaking so violently that he couldn't even pick up the pen he had brought to sign his forty-million-dollar triumph.
Richard Sterling stood up from the Apex delegation, his face like carved granite. ""Mrs. Hale, in light of these catastrophic revelations regarding executive embezzlement and criminal misappropriation of pension reserves, Apex Global is immediately withdrawing our acquisition offer under the material adverse change clause.""
""I completely understand and respect Apex’s position, Richard,"" I responded, meeting his gaze with absolute professionalism. ""However, as majority owner, I am implementing an immediate, unilateral corrective restructuring. The cancer within this organization will be excised within the hour. If Apex is willing to pause formal termination for fourteen business days, my forensic team will provide a fully audited, uncompromised balance sheet with Ethan Hale entirely removed from the corporate structure.""
Sterling paused. He looked at me—at the precision of my documentation, the unshakeable composure in my eyes, and the flawless forensic breakdown displayed on the monitors. A faint, respectful nod tilted his chin. ""You have fourteen days, Mrs. Hale. Not a minute more.""
The Apex delegation stood in unison and marched out of the room, leaving Ethan, Sloane, and the shattered remnants of Vanguard’s leadership behind.
The moment the doors clicked shut, I turned my attention back to the table. ""Board Resolution Number One,"" I announced crisply. ""By virtue of my fifty-one percent voting majority, I hereby move to terminate Ethan Hale as Chief Executive Officer of Vanguard Holdings, effective immediately, for cause, pursuant to Section 8 of his executive contract regarding moral turpitude, embezzlement, and breach of fiduciary trust.""
""Seconded,"" called out Greg Davies, the COO who had been laughing with Sloane thirty minutes earlier. When a ship sinks, the rats are always the first to salute the new captain.
""The motion carries,"" I stated. ""Ethan Hale is stripped of all executive authority, company credit cards, equity vestment schedules, and severance entitlements.""
""You can't fire me!"" Ethan screamed, his voice breaking into a ragged, pathetic screech. ""I am Vanguard! My name is on the fleet! My face is on the marketing collateral! You are an invalid housewife who can barely walk without clutching her stomach! You think you can run an interstate logistics empire?!""
""Board Resolution Number Two,"" I continued, entirely ignoring his hysterical breakdown. ""Miss Sloane Mercer is hereby terminated from her position as Marketing Director, effective immediately, for gross misconduct and complicity in corporate embezzlement. Furthermore, the company will initiate immediate civil litigation to freeze all assets purchased with misappropriated corporate capital, including her downtown condominium and personal luxury vehicles.""
Sloane dropped her iPad onto the carpet. The screen shattered with a sharp crack. Her face was ashen, her lips trembling uncontrollably. ""Ethan... do something! Tell her she can't do this! You promised me forty million dollars! You promised me we were moving to Paris!""
""Shut up, Sloane!"" Ethan snapped, turning on her with savage desperation. ""Just shut the hell up!""
""Security,"" I called out calmly.
This time, the four private security officers stationed at the perimeter marched forward without hesitation. They flanked Ethan and Sloane, their hands resting firmly on their duty belts.
""Please escort Mr. Hale and Miss Mercer off corporate premises,"" I instructed. ""They are permitted to take only their personal driver's licenses and mobile phones. All corporate laptops, badges, and keys are to be surrendered immediately. If either individual refuses to vacate within sixty seconds, have them arrested for criminal trespass.""
""Claire! Please!"" Ethan lunged toward me, his hands outstretched in a desperate, humiliating plea. ""Think about Noah! We’re a family! We can work through this! It was a mistake—Sloane seduced me, she manipulated the expense reports! I was under unbearable pressure from the board! You know I love you! You know I love our son!""
The sheer, sickening patheticness of his plea made my stomach turn. This was the same man who, less than thirty-six hours ago, had stood in my living room, watching me bleed through my robe, telling me I had three suitcases and twenty-four hours to vacate before he threw me into the street.
""You should have thought about Noah when you moved your mistress into his nursery,"" I said softly, my voice cutting like a diamond scalpel. ""Get out of my building, Ethan.""
The security officers seized Ethan by the elbows, wrenching him backward. He thrashed and cursed, his polished executive facade completely disintegrating into the raw, feral panic of a ruined man. Sloane was already weeping hysterically, clutching her designer purse as security herded her toward the freight elevators like common shoplifters.
As the elevator doors slid shut on Ethan’s screaming face, the entire floor went dead silent. The remaining department heads sat frozen in their chairs, staring at me with a mixture of terror and profound reverence.

I walked to the head of the table, pulled out the high-backed executive leather chair, and sat down.
""Ladies and gentlemen,"" I said, opening my notebook. ""Let’s begin the audit.""
