Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

Megan didn't let up for a single second. She advanced toward the defense table like an artillery strike zeroing in on a target.
"Your Honor, Exhibit B consists of the forensic financial audits of the Department of Defense allotment account established for Piper’s care," Megan continued, handing a thick ledger to the clerk. "Over the past eight months, twenty-two thousand four hundred dollars of military combat pay was deposited into that account. Not one single dollar went toward Piper's tuition, which resulted in her expulsion from her academy."
Megan turned her gaze directly upon Cheryl, who was trembling violently in her seat. "Instead, Mrs. Cheryl Cooper-Jenkins used those funds to purchase a late-model sports convertible, pay for her son's out-of-state baseball camps, and purchase an eighteen-hundred-dollar gaming rig. Meanwhile, the emergency room records from last night confirm Piper was malnourished, had untreated asthma due to expired medication, and bore multiple contusions consistent with adult handprints on her upper body."
Judge Vance took off his glasses, rubbing the bridge of his nose as if trying to wash away the sheer depravity of what he had just witnessed. When he looked up, his eyes were burning with cold, judicial wrath.
"Mr. Richard Cooper, Mrs. Evelyn Cooper, and Mrs. Cheryl Jenkins," Judge Vance began, his voice dropping into a low, deadly register. "In my twenty-four years on the bench, I have rarely seen a more grotesque display of cruelty, neglect, and moral cowardice. You took a servicewoman’s child—a child entrusted to you while her mother was overseas serving this nation—and you treated her like an animal while stealing her mother’s military salary to fund your own vanity."
"Your Honor, please!" Evelyn wailed, standing up with tears streaming down her face. "We are good people! We made a mistake! Richard was just stressed about money!"
"Silence!" the judge barked. "You did not make a mistake, Mrs. Cooper. You ran an abusive household and systematically exploited a vulnerable child."
Judge Vance picked up his pen and began signing documents with sharp, aggressive strokes. "First: temporary guardianship is immediately and permanently revoked. Full, sole, exclusive legal and physical custody of Piper Cooper is restored to First Lieutenant Jenna Cooper without condition."
"Second: I am issuing a permanent, lifetime restraining order against Richard Cooper, Evelyn Cooper, and Cheryl Jenkins. You are barred from coming within one thousand feet of Piper Cooper, her mother, her school, or any future residence. Any violation will result in an immediate sixty-day jail sentence."
"Third: I am ordering the immediate freeze of all bank accounts held by Richard, Evelyn, and Cheryl pending a civil restitution hearing. Every single cent of that twenty-two thousand four hundred dollars will be repaid to Lieutenant Cooper with maximum statutory interest, and Cheryl Jenkins’s vehicle will be seized by the sheriff’s department this afternoon to satisfy outstanding debts."
"And finally," Judge Vance paused, looking over at two sheriff’s deputies who had entered the rear of the courtroom at Megan’s signal. "Based on the evidence presented today—specifically the video evidence of child abandonment during a declared weather emergency and physical assault—I am finding probable cause for felony child endangerment, felony neglect, and wire fraud. Deputies, take Mr. Cooper and Mrs. Jenkins into custody."
Richard’s eyes bulged in pure terror as the deputies stepped forward, unhooking the handcuffs from their belts. "Wait! You can't do this to me! I'm Richard Cooper! I was the athletic director here for thirty years! Everyone knows who I am!"

"They certainly do now, Mr. Cooper," Judge Vance said coldly. "Court is adjourned."
The sound of metal ratchets clicking around Richard’s and Cheryl's wrists was the sweetest sound I had ever heard. Cheryl shrieked and buried her face in her hands as she was led through the side exit, while my father, stripped of his arrogance, walked with his head bowed in utter humiliation. Evelyn was left sobbing alone at the defense table, clutching her Bible as the realization of her family's total ruin crashed down upon her.
