Chapter 6 - The Broken Alibi

The rain had started to fall in heavy, gray sheets over the Chicago skyline by the time Alexander's private Maybach pulled up to the emergency entrance of Saint Jude Memorial Hospital. Emily sat in the leather passenger seat, her hands trembling slightly against her knees. Her clearance suit was rumpled from eight hours of intense auditing, but she refused to change. It was her armor; it reminded her of where she had been standing just eight hours earlier.

""My mother doesn't know anything about today,"" Emily whispered as they rode the service elevator up to the fifth-floor pulmonary wing. ""She thinks I spent the day filing paperwork in an entry-level pool. Her heart can't take sudden shocks.""

""We will handle this with whatever care she needs,"" Alexander assured her, his voice low and protective. ""Your mother's struggle ends today, Emily. I promise you that.""

When they stepped out onto the sterile, linoleum-floored corridor, they found two uniform officers guarding the door to Room 512. Inside, Richard Caldwell was sitting propped up in a hospital bed, an IV drip hooked to his arm, arguing furiously with a lawyer in an expensive wool trench coat.

""I don't care what Whitmore found!"" Caldwell hissed, his voice hoarse. ""That offshore account in Grand Cayman is registered under an international trust! He can't freeze it without a federal court order, and that takes forty-eight hours! Wire the five hundred thousand to the bail bondsman right now!""

""Mr. Caldwell,"" Emily’s voice sliced through the hospital room like a scalpel.

Caldwell snapped his head toward the door, his eyes bloodshot, his hair disheveled. ""You... how did you find me? Get this girl out of here!""

Emily walked inside, accompanied by Alexander, whose mere presence commanded absolute silence from the two defense lawyers.

""You chose the wrong hospital, Richard,"" Emily said, stepping to the foot of his bed. ""Three floors down, in the public charity ward, is Margaret Hayes. She has lived with chronic pulmonary fibrosis for a decade because she couldn't afford specialized treatment. While you were funneling millions through Cayman trusts, she was measuring her oxygen tanks to make them last until the first of the month.""

""I don't care about your mother!"" Caldwell snarled, dropping all pretense of gentility. ""The corporate world eats people like you alive! Your father was an idiot who threw his life away for a man who didn't even remember him for fifteen years! He died for nothing!""

A sharp crack echoed through the room.

It wasn't Emily who moved. Alexander had stepped forward, his fist planted firmly on Caldwell’s bedside table, rattling the medical equipment with such violence that the monitors beeped erratically.

""He died so that I could live, you pathetic thief,"" Alexander whispered, his voice trembling with an icy, lethal rage that made the lawyers back out into the hallway. ""And his daughter has returned to strip you of every stolen cent, every square foot of real estate, and every ounce of dignity you ever possessed. You aren't getting bail, Richard. I bought the debt on your primary residence twenty minutes ago. I purchased the lien on your yacht in Miami. And forty-five seconds ago, the Swiss Federal Banking Authority froze your Cayman conduit based on the international fraud indictment Emily filed.""

Caldwell stared at Alexander, the monitors beside him shrilling as his heart rate spiked into dangerous territory. ""You... you can't buy my personal debt...""

""I have forty billion dollars, Richard,"" Alexander said with chilling clarity. ""I can buy the air you breathe if I choose to. You will spend the rest of your natural life in a federal penitentiary in Terre Haute. And when you sit in your cell eating prison slop, remember that it was the girl in the eighty-nine-dollar suit who put you there.""
