Chapter 2 - The Serpent in the Corner Office

Down on the forty-second floor, Vanessa Sterling was holding court by the artisan coffee station, surrounded by three junior associates and her chief sycophant, an associate account manager named Bradley.

""I'm telling you, it was ninety percent polyester,"" Vanessa laughed, tossing her perfectly styled blonde hair over her shoulder while sipping an oat milk latte. ""The clearance sticker was bright neon orange. Right inside the wrist. Who even wears something like that to an international headquarters? It screams desperation. Caldwell assured me she wouldn’t last the probationary ninety days anyway. He just needed a body at the desk until the new agency temp arrives next week.""

""She looked like she was going to burst into tears when Whitmore dragged her away,"" Bradley chimed in, smirking into his paper cup. ""Mr. Whitmore probably took one look at that walking fashion disaster, realized she was embarrassing our lobby, and fired her personally. When was the last time the old man canceled an entire morning? That girl is already on the street.""

Before anyone could agree, the private elevator chimed with a crisp, authoritative tone. The double steel doors slid back, and the chatter instantly died.

Alexander Whitmore stepped out, radiating an aura of lethal calm that made everyone in the corridor involuntarily pull their shoulders back. But he was not alone. Walking beside him, composed and holding her head high despite the tear tracks still faintly visible on her skin, was Emily Hayes. She was still wearing the eighty-nine-dollar clearance suit, but Alexander had personally taken her worn portfolio and carried it under his own arm.

The sight sent a visible shockwave through the floor. Vanessa froze mid-sip, her smile instantly hardening into a mask of sudden confusion.

Alexander didn't walk toward the executive suites. He marched straight toward the reception rotunda, stopping just three feet from Vanessa and Bradley. The air grew so thick with tension that the hum of the fluorescent lights sounded deafening.

""Miss Sterling,"" Alexander said evenly, his voice carrying clearly across the entire open-plan office. ""I understand you have an extraordinary eye for detail. Particularly when it comes to textiles, retail price tags, and the personal finances of our newest personnel.""

Vanessa swallowed hard, setting her coffee down on the nearest counter with a trembling hand. ""Mr. Whitmore... I was merely ensuring that our corporate standards were being respected. As senior director, I believe presentation—""

""You believe presentation gives you license to humiliate a first-day employee in an open corridor,"" Alexander cut her off, the temperature of his voice dropping below zero. ""You took a photograph of Miss Hayes’s sleeve and distributed it to a private company chat during billable hours. Did you think that kind of behavior demonstrates executive presence?""

Vanessa’s face flushed crimson. ""Sir, it was an informal joke—""

""Hand over your company badge and your corporate phone to security,"" Alexander commanded without blinking. ""You are suspended without pay pending a comprehensive human resources investigation into workplace harassment and unauthorized dissemination of employee data.""

Gasps rippled through the hallway. Bradley quickly retreated two steps, trying to make himself invisible behind a marble pillar.

""You can't suspend me over a remark!"" Vanessa protested, her composure cracking into high-pitched panic. ""I am closing the Henderson logistics account next week! Richard Caldwell personally approved my promotion to vice president! You need to consult him before—""

May you like

""Richard Caldwell doesn't own this building, Miss Sterling. I do,"" Alexander replied, his gaze cold enough to shatter glass. ""And Richard Caldwell is about to have far more urgent problems than your ruined promotion.""

Turning his back on her completely, Alexander gestured to Emily. ""Miss Hayes, please follow me to the boardroom. Our Chief Operating Officer is about to explain where he spent two million dollars fifteen years ago.""
