Chapter 3 - The Cold Assessment

Allesio Romano did not panic. Men who panicked in his line of work ended up poured into the foundations of waterfront high-rises before their thirtieth birthdays. He stood beneath the shadow of the silk drapery, committing the eight lines of scrawled text to his photographic memory.
*Lorenzo and Miller. Loading dock breach at 9:25 PM. Fake tactical raid.*
Lorenzo Vella had carried Allesio on his shoulders at his father’s funeral twenty years ago. Lorenzo was his father’s underboss, the man who had taught him how to handle a ledger and how to hide a ledger. Treason from an enemy was expected; treason from a surrogate father was a fatal cancer.
Allesio’s sharp eyes tracked Lorenzo across the room. Sure enough, protruding by a millimeter from the inside chest pocket of Lorenzo's tailored jacket was the faint corner of a pale green folder. An official court-sealed narcotics warrant. Just as the note said.
Allesio glanced toward the pantry doors. The woman who had dropped the note was standing near the coffee station, polishing spoons with mechanical precision. She wasn't fleeing. She wasn't trembling. Her shoulders were set square, her eyes constantly cataloging the exits, the staff, the security men.
*She's trained,* Allesio thought instantly. Not a server. Either an undercover fed, a rival plant, or someone with exceptional nerve.
He tapped the side of his glass twice with his signet ring.
Within four seconds, a hulking man in a dark grey suit appeared at his side. Dante—Allesio’s chief of personal security, a man who spoke three words a day and could snap an oak beam with his bare hands.
"Boss?" Dante muttered, not moving his lips.
"Do not look at Lorenzo," Allesio ordered under his breath, his gaze fixed on the chandelier above. "He has sold us out to Frank Miller's dirty tactical squad. They are staging a breach at the loading dock at 9:25 PM when I go down for the senator’s call."
Dante didn't flinch. "I'll put two in the back of his skull right now."
"In front of the mayor and three federal judges? No. We aren't animals, Dante. We are businessmen," Allesio replied, his voice dropping an octave into absolute venom. "Contact the reserve unit at the warehouse. Have them box in the loading bay from the exterior alley. No sirens. Suppressed weapons. When Miller's van pulls up, let them enter the corridor. Nobody leaves that basement alive."
"Understood."
"And Dante?"
"Yes?"
"Bring the woman at the silver station into the green room behind the stage. Gently. If anyone touches a hair on her head, you answer to me."
Allesio turned and walked briskly across the marble floor toward the private administrative corridor. As he passed Lorenzo, he clapped the older man warmly on the shoulder.
"Lorenzo, my friend," Allesio smiled, his grin radiant and completely disarming. "Make sure the champagne is ready for nine-thirty. Tonight is going to be unforgettable."
"Always, my boy," Lorenzo answered with an affectionate crinkle around his eyes. "A night for the history books."
Allesio walked on, his teeth grinding so hard behind his smile that he could taste copper.
Five minutes later, Norah was setting down a tray of clean coffee saucers when a massive silhouette blocked the kitchen light.
"Miss Gallagher," Dante's voice was a low rumble.
Norah didn't jump. She set the saucer down calmly. "Yes?"
"Mr. Romano would like to thank you personally for the exceptional service. This way, please."
Norah glanced at the kitchen staff, who were too busy plating chocolate tortes to notice. She knew she had a choice: she could bolt through the fire exit into the alley, or she could finish what she started. She had spent four years listening to victims cry on the dispatch line because nobody was brave enough to stop the monsters.

"Lead the way," Norah said evenly.
