Chapter 10 - The Sovereign's Promise

Allesio Romano did not drop to one knee like an ordinary man; he stood before her as an equal, opening the box to reveal a flawless, three-carat emerald-cut diamond, set in platinum and flanked by two small sapphire stones—a tribute to the Sapphire Gala where their paths had collided.
"Norah Gallagher," Allesio spoke, his voice steady, rich with conviction, yet vibrating with raw vulnerability. "You walked into my life when it was surrounded by shadows, and you showed me how to lead in the light. You are my partner, my protector, and the only woman who has ever seen the man behind the empire."
Tears pricked the corners of Norah’s eyes, sparkling beneath the ballroom chandeliers.
For four years on the dispatch console, she had spent every night listening to tragedies she couldn't prevent, feeling helpless behind a plastic headset. Then she had hidden behind party trays and clipboards, invisible to the world. But standing here with Allesio, she was no longer invisible. She was cherished. She was powerful. She was home.
"Allesio..." she whispered, her voice trembling slightly.
"I don't offer you a cage, gilded or otherwise," Allesio continued, his gaze holding hers with absolute devotion. "I offer you an empire built on your terms. An empire of honor, safety, and mutual respect. Will you marry me?"
Below them, the string quartet struck up a sweeping, romantic crescendo. The crowd was oblivious to the intimate drama unfolding on the mezzanine, but to Norah, the entire universe had shrunk down to the amber eyes of the man standing before her.
"Yes," Norah said, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "A thousand times yes."
Allesio let out a soft, relieved laugh, slipping the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly, cold platinum warming instantly against her skin. He pulled her gently by the waist into his arms, lifting her slightly as his lips met hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their new beginning.
Down in the ballroom, Dante caught sight of them from the security station near the grand staircase. The giant enforcer allowed himself a rare, wide grin, subtly tapping his earpiece.
"All units," Dante muttered into the radio channel. "Stand down the alert posture. The boss just secured the future."
When Allesio finally broke the kiss, he rested his forehead against Norah’s, his fingers intertwined with hers, the diamond catching every facet of the chandelier light.

"No more secrets," Norah whispered playfully, resting her hand over his heart, feeling its steady, strong rhythm. "And no more notes slipped into your pockets."
Allesio smiled, kissing the crown of her head as they looked out over the ballroom together—not as master and servant, not as gangster and witness, but as rulers of their own destiny, ready to face the world side by side.
