Chapter 7 - Retribution at Dawn

The sound of incoming rotor blades thundered overhead.

Two matte-black helicopters bearing federal insignia swept over Star Island, their massive searchlights blinding the smoking courtyard. At the docks, four tactical patrol boats cut through the bay waters, cutting off Corvo's escape craft and hauling his drowning mercenaries out of the water in handcuffs.

Jack hadn't waited for the federal agents to slide down their ropes.

He was already at my side, gripping my shoulders with hands coated in soot and blood, checking me frantically for injuries. ""Are you out of your mind? You could have been killed!""

""You were about to take a bullet for my son,"" I breathed, trembling as the adrenaline crashed through my veins. ""And besides... I didn't throw the real key.""

I reached into the deep pocket of my robe and pulled out the tiny micro-transponder, safely wrapped in a silk napkin. ""I only threw the empty antique shell. Leo always taught me that magicians never show the hand that holds the coin.""

Jack stared at the tiny chip in my palm, then threw his head back and laughed—a booming, victorious laugh that echoed over the bay for the first time in years.

""She's a Romano, through and through,"" Jack muttered, pulling me into a fierce, protective embrace against his chest. I buried my face in his torn navy jacket, letting the tears of two years of terror finally wash away.

Special Agent Ramirez of the Department of Justice marched up the terrace steps, accompanied by a dozen heavily armed federal marshals. He looked at Corvo, who was groaning in the shallow water of the fountain, clutching his shattered shoulder, then looked at Jack.

""You took your sweet time, Ramirez,"" Jack said coldly, releasing me but keeping an arm around my shoulder.

""The warrant took time to clear through international maritime courts, Jack,"" Ramirez said, eyeing the smoking courtyard. ""Corvo’s entire infrastructure in Miami, New York, and Bogota has been raided simultaneously. His operations are finished.""

Jack pointed down at Corvo. ""He ordered the hit on my brother Leo two years ago. I have the unredacted digital ledgers right here. Add twenty counts of domestic terrorism, attempted kidnapping, and capital murder to his indictment.""

Corvo was dragged past us in zip-ties, his white suit ruined by soot and bay water. As he passed me, he glared with burning hatred, but I didn't flinch. I looked him dead in the eye until he dropped his gaze in shame.

When the sun began to peak over the Atlantic horizon, painting the Miami skyline in brilliant shades of tangerine and gold, the estate gates opened.

Elena led Tyler out onto the patio. The boy stopped, took one look at Jack’s bandaged forehead and my soot-stained robe, and ran at full speed across the grass, slamming into our arms.

""Mommy! Uncle Jack! You won the game!""

Jack hoisted the eight-year-old onto his shoulders with a gentle grin. ""We won, Tyler. The bad guys are gone forever.""
