Chapter 3 - The Gilded Fortress

The convoy moved through Miami like a dark thunderstorm. Three black, bulletproof SUVs flanked us as we crossed the private causeway leading to Star Island. Palm trees swayed under the blistering Florida sun, but inside the leather-lined interior of Jack's vehicle, the air was conditioned to a crisp chill.
Tyler had fallen asleep against my shoulder, exhausted from the sensory overload of his birthday feast and clenching a wrapped box of imported chocolates Jack had handed him on the way out.
""He looks so much like him,"" Jack murmured from the opposite passenger seat, watching Tyler's steady breathing. ""Leo was always the smart one. He wanted books, universities, legitimate businesses. I stayed behind to handle the dirt so he wouldn't have to.""
""He loved you, Jack,"" I said, my voice softening as the fear began to yield to exhaustion. ""Before he died, he used to tell me that his brother was the guardian at the gates of hell. He said as long as you were watching the door, monsters couldn't touch him.""
Jack turned his head, staring out at the turquoise waters of the bay. ""I failed him once, Anna. I won't fail his son.""
The vehicle glided through massive wrought-iron gates bearing a stylized Romano family crest. The estate was breathtaking—a sprawling Mediterranean revival villa surrounded by fifteen-foot stone walls, private docks, and manicured tropical gardens. Yet everywhere I looked, there were reminders of Jack's brutal reality: security cameras mounted in the banyans, men patrolling with discreet submachine guns, and guard dogs pacing the stone terraces.
We were led into a grand foyer paved with polished Italian marble. An elderly woman with silver hair pulled into a neat bun hurried down the sweeping staircase, her apron fluttering.
""Elena,"" Jack said, his tone warm and respectful. ""Prepare the master guest suite. My sister-in-law and my nephew will be staying indefinitely.""
Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she saw Tyler sleeping in my arms. ""Blessed Mother... Leo’s boy?""
""Leo’s boy,"" Jack confirmed. ""Take them up. Ensure they have everything they need. Clothes, toys, medical checkups—call Dr. Vance.""
Two hours later, after Tyler was tucked into an enormous canopy bed surrounded by brand-new toy sets Jack's men had urgently procured, I stood on the second-story balcony overlooking the private marina. I wore a simple silk robe Elena had brought me, shedding the threadbare sundress I had scrubbed on a washboard that morning.
Footsteps echoed softly behind me. Jack joined me at the stone railing, handing me a glass of sparkling water.
""Your diner job in Little Havana,"" Jack said casually. ""I bought the building twenty minutes ago. You're officially on permanent paid leave.""
""Jack, stop,"" I sighed, rubbing my temples. ""You can't just buy my life. I've spent two years fighting for our independence. I won't trade poverty for a gilded cage.""
Jack didn't flinch. ""It’s not a cage, Anna. It’s a bunker. Victor Corvo just called my private line.""

My breath caught. ""What did he say?""
""He said he saw the footage from the restaurant. He offered me a deal: hand over Tyler and Leo’s cryptographic key, or he burns Miami to the ground to take them."" Jack took a slow sip from his glass, his eyes turning to liquid mercury. ""I told him to start lighting matches.""
