Chapter 5 - The Parlor Ambush

The double doors of the kitchen blew inward with a splintering crash of mahogany and brass hinges. Two men in black tactical vests burst through the cloud of white drywall dust, submachine guns raised, their faces covered in neoprene balaclavas.

"Moretti! Hands on your—"

The first man never finished his sentence. Vittorio didn't shout, nor did he hesitate; he fired twice through the granite countertop with terrifying, surgical precision. The deafening cracks of the Walther shook the glassware in the cabinets, echoing off the tile floors like rolling thunder. Both intruders dropped instantly, sprawling across the spotless kitchen floor as dark pools of crimson began to soak into the grout.

Elena stood frozen behind the island, her hands gripping the edge of the cold steel so hard her knuckles turned translucent. The smell of cordite and copper filled the air, sharp and suffocating. This wasn't a movie, and these weren't actors; this was the brutal, unglamorous underworld her son had sleepwalked into, and she was standing right in the center of the crossfire.

"More coming through the rear courtyard," a voice crackled over the secure comms unit clipped to Vittorio's belt. It was a gravelly voice belonging to a man named Rocco, his chief of security stationed in the subterranean garage. "Marcone's cleanup crew. Four units, heavy ordnance. They're trying to breach the panic room."

Vittorio pivoted sharply, his eyes darting toward the hallway before locking onto Elena. He reached across the island, grabbed her by the wrist with astonishing strength, and hauled her over the counter into the relative safety of the pantry alcove.

"Listen to me very carefully," Vittorio said, his breath coming in hot, measured bursts against her ear. "There is a service stairwell behind the spice racks. It leads down to the garage exit on Sixty-Ninth Street. Take the black Jaguar parked in stall three—the keys are in the ignition. Drive straight to the safehouse in Oyster Bay. Do not stop for Daniel, do not go back to Pell Street, and do not talk to anyone."

"And you?" Elena demanded, her fingers clutching the lapel of his ruined dress shirt. For the first time, her voice cracked, raw with a strange, terrifying emotion she refused to name. "What about you?"

"I have a corporation to dissolve," Vittorio murmured darkly, a dangerous, razor-thin smile touching his lips. He pressed a heavy, diamond-encrusted signet ring into her palm—the Moretti crest, heavy and cold. "Show this to Rocco at the garage gate. He'll get you out. If I'm not in Oyster Bay by midnight, take the ledger from the library, hand it to the U.S. Attorney whose business card is clipped to page one, and burn my entire empire to the ground."

Before she could argue, he spun around, kicked open the pantry service door, and vanished into the swirling gunsmoke of the hallway, leaving Elena alone in the dark with a gun, a ring, and a war she never signed up for.
