Chapter 10 - The Queen of Pell Street

The rain had stopped by the time Elena stepped out onto the Queens pavement, leaving the autumn air sharp, clean, and smelling of wet asphalt and distant river salt. The heavy brass door of the Maybach clicked open softly as Vittorio leaned across the leather seat to push it wider for her, his dark eyes warm with an unspoken, fierce devotion that money could never buy and bullets could never break.
She slid into the cool leather interior beside him, adjusting her coat around her shoulders with the quiet grace of a woman who had finally claimed her rightful throne at the center of the world. Vittorio shifted the car into gear, his strong hand briefly covering hers on the center console, his thumb brushing over the heavy diamond signet ring resting on her finger.
"Where to, Mrs. Moretti?" he asked, his low voice carrying that familiar, unhurried cadence that had first caught her attention in the registry office on Pell Street.
Elena looked out the tinted window as the Manhattan skyline rose before them in the distance, a glittering cathedral of steel and glass against the fading twilight. Her mother's death certificate was finally filed; her son was safe, solvent, and far away from Marcone's ghost towns; and her ledger was balanced down to the very last penny.

"Home," Elena said, her lips curving into a slow, victorious smile. "Let's go home."
Vittorio nodded once, pressed his foot against the accelerator, and the heavy black car glided forward into the humming heart of the city—leaving the past behind in the dust, forever bound by blood, survival, and a marriage born in the wrong line at the right time.
