Chapter 10 - A Table for Two

One year later.

The spring breeze coming off Lake Michigan carried the fresh scent of blooming magnolias and warm rain. On the historic corner of Michigan Avenue and Adams, the grand opening of Vance & Ferris Dining Room was in full, triumphant swing.

It wasn't a shadowy front for mob bosses, nor a private playground for corrupt elites. It was a world-class culinary sanctuary founded on fairness, elegance, and community. The staff were paid the highest living wages in the city, the kitchen was run by Marco—who had gladly jumped ship from Canali's to head the executive kitchen—and the dining room was flooded with bright, welcoming sunlight through floor-to-ceiling glass arches.

Mounted behind the polished mahogany host stand, framed in museum-grade UV glass, hung a battered, dented antique silver serving tray.

A small brass plaque beneath it read:

DEFENDER OF TRUTH. NOVEMBER 3RD.

Customers often asked about the strange, dented platter in the middle of such a luxurious restaurant. The servers would always smile warmly and tell them: ""That's the tray that changed our city forever.""

I stood near the reservation desk, dressed in an elegant ivory silk pantsuit, a tablet tucked under my arm as I reviewed the evening's fully booked seating chart. My life was unrecognizable from the exhausted, shivering girl who had run through the November sleet fourteen months ago. I had earned a master's degree in hospitality management, I was running the most celebrated restaurant in Illinois, and for the first time in my life, I felt completely safe.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind.

Callum rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my hair. ""You've been on your feet for six hours, Mrs. Ferris. The general manager needs to sit down.""

I turned in his embrace, wrapping my arms around his neck. He looked stunning in a tailored charcoal suit, his eyes bright with happiness and peace. The tension that once lived in his shoulders had completely dissolved, replaced by the quiet confidence of a man building a legitimate legacy.

""The opening night of our flagship restaurant, and you want me to sit down?"" I teased, tapping his lapel. ""A good server never leaves the floor during the dinner rush.""

""You're not a server, Nadia. You're the boss,"" Callum whispered, leaning in and capturing my lips in a tender, lingering kiss that made the bustling room around us melt away into background noise.

When he pulled back, his hand reached into his pocket and produced a single, polished silver key on a velvet ribbon.

""What's this?"" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

""The cottage by the lake,"" Callum said softly, his eyes shining with adoration. ""The one your father brought you to when you were a girl. I bought the property six months ago and had the original house fully restored. Orion’s belt still sits right over the front porch.""

My breath caught in my throat. Tears of pure joy welled in my eyes as I buried my face in his chest, holding him with all the strength in my soul.

""We're going home tonight,"" he whispered into my hair.

May you like

""Yes,"" I answered, smiling through my tears as the dining room hummed with laughter, music, and the clinking of glasses. ""We're finally going home.""

From a humble waitress shielding herself from a stray bullet to the woman who brought down an underworld empire and found true love, I had learned one unforgettable truth: sometimes, the greatest shield in the world isn't made of steel or armor—it's the courage to stand your ground and fight for the people you love."
