Chapter 10 - A New Reign

One year later, the city of Bellhaven had almost forgotten the bloody reputation of the "Black King."
Salvatore Lombardi was now hailed as the city's foremost maritime entrepreneur and philanthropist, spearheading a massive waterfront redevelopment project that provided thousands of legitimate jobs. The old crime syndicates had either fractured into obscurity or been thoroughly expunged under his ironclad leadership.
On a crisp October afternoon, the grand opening of the Russo Children's Dental Pavilion drew a crowd of hundreds outside the city's central hospital.
I stood on the podium behind a bouquet of white lilies, cutting the ceremonial red ribbon with a pair of oversized gold shears. Salvatore stood beside me, his arm wrapped securely around my waist, his expression radiant with unmasked pride. The community cheered, cameras flashed, and dozens of young families filed into the state-of-the-art facility that my clinic now overseen.
Later that evening, after the crowds had cleared, Salvatore and I walked along the cobblestone promenade of the quiet harbor where our nightmare had begun. The ocean breeze blew gently across the water, carrying the fresh, salt air of autumn.
Salvatore stopped near the edge of the stone railing, turning me toward him. The city skyline sparkled behind him like a sea of diamonds.
"Do you remember what you asked me when you first came to my mansion, Lena?" he murmured softly.
"I asked if you were going to behave yourself," I laughed, resting my hands against the lapels of his coat.
"You told me that soup wasn't a treatment," he smiled, reaching into his inner pocket. "And you were right. You didn't just fix my jaw, Lena. You cured an entire family of its rot. You gave me a future I never believed I deserved."
He knelt down on one knee onto the smooth cobblestone pier.
From his pocket, he produced a velvet box. Inside rested a magnificent ring featuring an exquisite, flawless emerald encircled by brilliant-cut diamonds.
"I swore I would never bow to anyone in this city," Salvatore said, his voice deep and thick with emotion. "Except for the woman who saved my soul. Dr. Lena Russo, will you marry me?"
Tears of pure happiness blurred my vision. I looked into the eyes of the man who had traded an empire of shadows for a life of honor, all for the love of a stubborn dentist who refused to back down.

"Yes," I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck as he lifted me off my feet. "A thousand times, yes."
As his lips met mine beneath the glowing stars of New York, the dark legacy of the Lombardi mafia officially came to an end—and our new story had only just begun.
