Chapter 1 - The Silver Shard

The tension in the mahogany-lined study turned into lead. Salvatore Lombardi rinsed the antiseptic wash into a sterile stainless basin, spitting out dark pink froth. His dark eyes remained fixed on the tiny piece of brass-coated metal resting on my surgical tray.

Carmine took a sharp step backward, bumping against a heavy grandfather clock. "That is garbage, Lena. An old dental filling from a cheap back-alley clinic. Throw it in the incinerator."

"It's not an amalgam filling, Mr. Lombardi," I said, holding the shard up under the high-intensity surgical lamp with my extraction forceps. "Amalgam is silver, tin, and mercury. It fractures into rough, chalky grains under pressure. This has a micro-grooved jacket and a dense core. It's a high-grade ballistic fragment. Specifically, the tip of a hollow-point slug that shattered against your mandible, lodged under your rear periosteum, and eroded the nerve root of your second molar for almost a decade."

Salvatore slowly reached up, his large, calloused fingers gently pressing against the hollow beneath his left cheekbone. For eight agonizing years, every chew, swallow, and cold draft of wind had felt like an electric shock straight through his brain stem. The pain that had reduced the most terrifying mob boss in New York to lukewarm broths and silent rages had not been an ordinary infection. It was the souvenir of a ghost.

"The ambush at Pier 42," Salvatore murmured, his voice gravelly from the numbness in his tongue. "My driver died instantly. Two bodyguards were cut down before they could clear their holsters. A sniper fired from the cargo crane two hundred yards out. When the police searched the scene, they found no brass, no casings, and claimed the shooter used standard military surplus ammunition that couldn't be traced."

Carmine's throat bobbed. He reached inside his tailored charcoal blazer, his fingers twitching toward an armpit holster. "Brother, listen to me. This girl is talking nonsense to inflate her bill. Let me call Dr. Peter. Let me handle this before she fills your head with poison."

"Peter was on my payroll for eight years, Carmine," Salvatore said without blinking, his gaze never leaving his younger brother's pale face. "Peter told me it was phantom neuralgia. Peter told me cutting open my jaw would paralyze my face. Yet a thirty-one-year-old girl with a tray of hand tools and thirty minutes of local anesthetic pulled out a bullet."

Two armed enforcers stationed by the double doors shifted their stance, sensing the shift in gravity. Salvatore gestured slightly with one finger, and both men crossed their arms, effectively blocking the exits. Carmine stopped reaching into his jacket. Sweat began bead along his hairline.

"Dr. Russo," Salvatore said softly, leaning back into his leather armchair. "Can a piece that small identify the gun?"

"The rifling marks on this jacket are remarkably intact," I replied, carefully transferring the shard into a sterile specimen vial and screwing the lid tight. "If you have the weapon, ballistics can match it in five minutes."
