Chapter 8 - The Shadow King's Vengeance

By midnight, a driving blizzard had completely choked the streets of downtown Chicago. At the Navy Pier grand pavilion, where Moretti operated his primary high-stakes underground casino, the music and clatter of chips masked the gathering shadow. Moretti was drinking vintage champagne in his private second-floor lounge, celebrating what he foolishly believed was his total victory over Damen Blackwood.

He had destroyed the girl's shop. He had wounded the king. He assumed Damen would retreat to lick his wounds.

He was wrong.

The power to the pavilion cut out with the sharp crack of an industrial transformer blowing outside. The chandelier went pitch black, leaving only the eerie emergency red lights casting bloody reflections across the gaming floor. Downstairs, screaming erupted as flashbang grenades shattered the high glass windows.

Damen Blackwood walked through the front doors of the casino like the Grim Reaper in an immaculate black trench coat. He didn't rush. He had forty armed men securing every fire escape and loading dock. Moretti's private guards, realizing within seconds that they were completely surrounded by Blackwood's elite tactical units, threw down their weapons and pressed their faces to the plush carpet.

Upstairs in the private lounge, Moretti fumbled with a silver revolver, his hands shaking so violently he dropped two bullets onto the parquet floor. The mahogany double doors splintered inward with a deafening crash. Marcus stepped through first, leveling an automatic shotgun, followed by Damen.

Damen walked slowly toward the table where Moretti stood trembling, backing away until his spine slammed against the bulletproof glass overlooking the frozen lake.

""Damen... wait!"" Moretti pleaded, his voice cracking into high-pitched terror. ""It was business! Just business! The girl—I’ll pay for the damage! I’ll give you five million in cash! Take the south docks, take the whole damn city! Just let me take a plane to Florida!""

Damen stopped two feet in front of him. His wounded side burned with white-hot fire, but his face was completely devoid of mercy. He reached out with lightning speed, catching Moretti by the throat with his bare left hand, lifting the heavy man onto his tiptoes against the glass.

""You burned her shop,"" Damen whispered, his voice dangerously soft.

""Damen, please—"" Moretti choked, clawing uselessly at Damen's iron grip.

""She spent three years waking up at four in the morning to feed the people of this city,"" Damen continued, his gray eyes colder than the blizzard pounding the glass behind them. ""She spent her Sundays teaching grown men to read. She never hurt a living soul. And you tried to use her to break me.""

Damen pulled his customized pistol from beneath his coat and pressed the cold steel barrel against Moretti’s forehead. Moretti squeezed his eyes shut, sobbing openly, wetting himself on the Persian rug.

""I’m not going to shoot you, Salvatore,"" Damen said coldly.

Moretti opened one tear-filled eye, a pathetic glimmer of hope sparking in his chest. ""You... you aren't?""

""A bullet is too clean for an animal like you,"" Damen replied. He turned his head toward the door. ""Marcus. Hand him over to the Federal marshals waiting in the harbor. Every ledger, every bank account, every offshore shell company Moretti owns was delivered to the Department of Justice forty minutes ago. By sunrise, you will be locked in a federal supermax facility in Florence, Colorado. You will spend the next forty years staring at a concrete wall, forgotten by the world.""

May you like

Damen threw Moretti to the floor like a sack of trash. ""And if you ever utter the name Amelia Hart again, I won't send the feds. I’ll come myself.""

Without looking back, Damen turned and walked out of the casino into the swirling snow. The war was over. But as he stepped into the back of his waiting Maybach, his chest felt hollow. He had defeated his enemies, he had secured his empire, but he had destroyed the only pure thing that had ever dared to smile at him.
