Chapter 7 - The Syndicate's Reckoning

For the next four days, Amelia was forbidden from leaving the upper level of the estate, but the muffled vibrations of an all-out war shook the mansion constantly. Couriers arrived hourly with thick manila envelopes, city councilmen were escorted into Damen's study under armed guard, and the city's evening news broadcasts were dominated by reports of mysterious industrial fires and high-profile FBI raids targeting south-side shell corporations.

Damen didn't rest. Despite the doctor’s furious protests, he ran his empire from an antique leather armchair in his study, IV drip pole standing beside his desk, his side wrapped in tight compression bandages. Amelia found herself bringing him trays of food—simple, nourishing broths, fresh bread she baked in the mansion's quiet kitchen, and black coffee brewed exactly the way he liked it.

A strange, domestic intimacy bloomed in the center of the storm. Between frantic calls with district attorneys and port authorities, Damen would set his phone aside just to watch her read by the fireplace. He asked about her childhood in Indiana, about the mother she had lost to cancer, about her dream of expanding Honey & Hearth into a community culinary center.

""You care too much,"" Damen said one evening, his voice soft in the firelit gloom as she changed the dressing on his side with steady, surprisingly capable hands. ""The world tears people like you apart, Amelia.""

""No,"" she said, taping the clean gauze down before pulling his shirt over his chest. ""People like me survive because we actually have something to protect. People like you just survive out of habit.""

Damen caught her hand, pulling her down until her face was inches from his. His gray eyes were dark with unmasked hunger. ""You think I have nothing to protect?"" he whispered, his thumb caressing the soft curve of her jawline.

Amelia's heart fluttered wild against her ribs. She didn't pull away. For five days, she had been resisting the gravitational pull of this dangerous, damaged man, but standing in this quiet study, feeling the heat radiating from his skin, the walls she had built collapsed. ""Damen...""

Before she could finish, the study doors burst open without a knock. Marcus stood in the frame, breathing heavily, a tablet clutched in his grip.

""Boss,"" Marcus said, his voice urgent, completely ignoring the intimacy of the scene. ""Moretti made a move. But not against our warehouses.""

Damen instantly sat upright, his expression turning to stone. ""What did he do?""

Marcus hesitated, casting a grim look toward Amelia. ""At nine o'clock tonight, a crew hit Halsted Street. They firebombed Honey & Hearth. The whole block is ablaze.""

Amelia staggered back, the world spinning violently beneath her boots. ""No... no, no, no!"" she gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. Her bakery. Her life's work. Her mother’s vintage recipe books. The copper pots she had spent three years saving for. Everything she had sacrificed to build was turning to ash.

She collapsed against the desk, uncontrollable sobs tearing through her throat. Damen rose from his chair, completely ignoring the tearing agony in his stitched side. He walked over, pulled her shivering body into his arms, and held her head against his chest. She wept against his collar, beating her fists weakly against his back.

May you like

""I'll rebuild it,"" he promised, his voice a low, terrifying growl against her hair, vibrating with absolute lethal intent. ""I swear to you on my life, Amelia, I will build you ten bakeries. But first, I am going to bury Salvatore Moretti.""

He looked over her head at Marcus, his eyes turning to black ice. ""Assemble the entire inner circle. Call the port marshals. We end this tonight.""
