Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Past

The morning sun struggled to pierce through the thick canopy of mist hanging over the valley. Anna sat beside me on the low stone wall, our shoulders barely touching. She had not pulled away when I sat beside her, but there was an immense, fragile chasm between us—a canyon carved by 312 days of deceit and years of suffocating neglect.

""What will you do now, Nicholas?"" she asked, her voice carried away by the gentle rustle of falling leaves. ""Will you burn New York to the ground? Will you slaughter the Falcones, line the harbor with bodies, and force me into another fortified penthouse with bulletproof windows and armed guards at the gate?""

I looked at my hands—hands that had signed execution orders, handled millions in illicit cash, and gripped weapons of war without a second thought. For the first time in my life, they felt completely useless.

""I don't care about the syndicate, Anna,"" I said, speaking with an honesty that felt completely foreign on my tongue. ""When I was on that yacht, surrounded by luxury, I thought I had conquered the world. But when I turned on that phone and saw that you were gone, my empire turned to ash in an instant. I realized that every dollar I earned, every territory I took, was meaningless if I couldn't come home and see your smile. If you tell me to walk away from everything today—if you tell me to sign over the assets, burn the books, and never set foot in New York again—I will do it without hesitation.""

Anna looked at me, a faint, melancholic smile touching the corners of her lips. ""You can't just walk away, Nicholas. Men like Don Falcone don't let rivals retire into the sunset. If you abandon the syndicate now, your enforcers will splinter into warring factions. The streets will drown in blood. And Lorenzo Falcone will hunt you to the ends of the earth, not because he needs to, but because his pride demands your head.""

Before I could answer, the sharp, rhythmic crack of a high-powered rifle echoed from the tree line across the valley.

The stone wall directly behind Anna’s head exploded in a shower of pulverized granite and dust. Julian’s instincts from years of close-protection training had already warned him; from down the gravel path, I heard his desperate shout: ""Sniper! Boss, get down!""

I didn't think. Every ounce of my underworld training, every muscle fiber honed for survival, reacted in a fraction of a second. I threw my entire body over Anna, tackling her off the stone wall and slamming both of us down into the recessed dirt trench of an old drainage ditch running along the perimeter of the orchard. A second shot cracked through the air, tearing through the branches of the apple tree directly above us, showering us in splintered wood and severed twigs.

""Anna, stay down! Don't move!"" I roared, pressing her body beneath mine, using my wide shoulders and heavy wool coat as a human shield against the incoming fire.

""Nicholas!"" she cried out, her hands gripping my lapels, her eyes wide with terror—not for herself, but as she saw a dark red stain instantly blooming across the left shoulder of my coat. The bullet that had sheared through the apple branches had grazed deep across my trapezius, ripping through flesh and fabric alike.

Down the path, Julian was already returning fire with his service sidearm, using a stone fountain for cover, firing controlled double-taps toward the ridge. But a pistol was useless against a designated marksman rifle concealed four hundred yards away in the dense timber.

Elena came running out of the chapel’s rear emergency exit, holding a heavy pump-action Remington shotgun she had retrieved from the monastery’s caretaker shed. ""The underground crypts!"" she screamed through the gunfire. ""Nicholas! The drainage pipe behind you leads to the old wine cellars! Move her inside!""

Another round ricocheted violently off the drainage pipe’s iron grating, sending sparks into the dirt. Lorenzo Falcone had not relied solely on Tessa’s intelligence. He had anticipated that my search for Anna would lead me to her family’s roots. He had tracked us here, bypassing the city streets entirely to strike at the moment I was completely disarmed and emotionally vulnerable.

""Anna, crawl into the pipe!"" I commanded, gritting my teeth against the searing agony burning through my shoulder. Blood was warm and slick against my collar, soaking into my shirt.

""I’m not leaving you!"" she gasped, her hands covered in my blood as she pressed firmly against my wound, attempting to staunch the bleeding with her bare fingers. ""Nicholas, you're hit!""

May you like

""I promised you fourteen years ago that I would open the door myself,"" I said, forcing a bloody, determined smile onto my face as I looked into her terrified brown eyes. ""I’m not letting you die in this ditch for my sins. Move! Now!""

With a mighty heave, I ripped the rusted iron grating off the drainage culvert with my uninjured right arm. I shoved Anna into the dark, stone-lined tunnel just as a third sniper round chewed into the dirt where her head had rested a second prior. I slid into the darkness behind her, collapsing onto the cold flagstone floor of the subterranean crypt as Elena slammed the heavy oak service door shut from within, dropping a massive iron locking bar into place.
