Chapter 4 - The Shattered Symphony

The rain continued to lash against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the luxury Manhattan townhouse I had bought for Tessa four months ago. The interior was modern, cold, and opulent—all white marble, polished chrome, and minimalist art. It lacked every ounce of the warmth, character, and history that Anna had breathed into our family estate. Here, everything was transactional, bought with dirty money to service a midlife ego that had brought me to the brink of total destruction.

Tessa sat on an ivory leather sofa, wrapped in a plush cashmere robe I had purchased for her in Paris. She was pale, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she held an untouched glass of water. Two of my armed enforcers stood like statues beside the entrance, while Julian leaned quietly against the wall, his arm freshly bandaged and tucked into a black sling.

When I walked into the living room, stripping off my wet leather gloves, Tessa burst into theatrical tears, leaping to her feet and attempting to throw her arms around my neck. ""Nicholas! Oh my god, Nicholas, thank goodness you're safe! Those men... they came to my door, they forced me to stay here! What is happening? The news says Anna is missing, and now there’s gunfire in Brooklyn—""

I didn't yell. I didn't strike her. I simply caught her by the wrists with a grip like an iron vise, stopping her dead in her tracks. Her eyes widened in terror as she felt the absolute, unyielding coldness radiating from my face. I forced her back down onto the sofa with a slow, deliberate pressure that brooked no resistance.

""Sit down, Tessa,"" I said, pulling an armchair directly opposite her and sitting down. I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees, staring into her eyes with the cold detachment of an executioner examining a condemned soul.

""Nicholas, you're scaring me..."" she whimpered, pulling her robe tighter around her slender frame. ""I love you! I stood by you while your wife was making you miserable—""

""Anna never made me miserable,"" I interrupted, my voice dropping to a terrifying, quiet pitch. ""Anna was the only clean, pure thing that ever existed in my life, and I threw her away for a parasite.""

I reached into my inner pocket, pulled out the manila folder, and dropped it onto the glass coffee table between us. The color photographs spilled across the glass—intimate moments, private vacations, secret dinners. Tessa’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes darted wildly around the room, searching for an escape that didn't exist.

""Anna watched us for three hundred and twelve days,"" I whispered. ""She sat in our home, knowing every lie, counting every betrayal, letting me think I was a mastermind while I was acting like a pathetic, aging clod. But she wasn't the only one taking pictures, was she, Tessa?""

I pulled out my phone, showing her the encrypted call logs extracted from her private iPad by Marcus ten minutes ago. Every outgoing call over the past two months routed directly to a burner phone registered to Lorenzo Falcone.

""Two hundred thousand dollars,"" I continued, reciting the ledger Marcus had uncovered. ""That was your price to tell Lorenzo when I was boarding the yacht. That was your price to whisper into his ear that I was searching for Anna in Red Hook. You didn't just sleep in my bed; you set an ambush to have me executed so you could collect a bounty and run off with Falcone’s crew.""

Tessa’s face contorted, the innocent, fragile persona peeling away like cheap paint to reveal the desperate, calculating opportunist beneath. ""You think you're a god, Nicholas!"" she spat, tears of fear turning into venomous malice. ""You’re an aging gangster with blood on your hands! You used me to feel young, to feel powerful! Why shouldn't I take Falcone’s money? You were never going to leave Anna for me anyway! You mumbled her name in your sleep every night on that yacht! You’re pathetic!""

The truth of her words struck me harder than any bullet. She was right. I had used her. I had indulged my worst impulses, wallowing in the cheap affirmation of a woman who cared only for my black card and my reputation. I had betrayed a queen for a street thief.

""Julian,"" I said calmly, standing up and turning my back on her.

""Yes, boss?""

""Cancel the lease on this building. Seize every piece of jewelry, every handbag, every dollar in her accounts that came from my syndicate. Revoke her passport through our port authorities. Drop her off at the bus station in Newark with fifty dollars and the clothes on her back.""

Tessa gasped, scrambling forward on her knees. ""No! Nicholas, please! My violin... my career at the symphony! Don Falcone will kill me if I don't deliver you!""

I stopped at the doorway, glancing over my shoulder. ""You should have thought about the consequences before you decided to play a melody for two different maestros. Consider yourself lucky that my wife taught me how to show mercy. Because if Anna were the woman I used to think she was, I would have had you buried beneath the harbor tonight.""

I walked out into the corridor, the heavy oak door slamming shut behind me, sealing Tessa into the ruins of the hollow world she had helped create. As we stepped into the private elevator, Julian turned to me. ""Where to now, Nicholas? The streets are going to erupt. Falcone knows Marco failed. He’s going to hit our supply chains.""

""Let Marcus trace the medical supply chains in the Northeast,"" I answered, my focus narrowing with absolute clarity. ""Elena Rossi is a pediatric surgeon who specializes in trauma care. If Anna is with her, they aren't hiding in luxury hotels or suburban houses. Anna’s mother died of heart disease in a small sanctuary hospice in upstate New York twelve years ago. St. Jude’s Valley. It’s off the grid, run by an independent monastic order that refuses syndicate donations. That’s where Elena would take her. That’s where Anna would go to heal.""
