Chapter 9 - The Purge of Chicago

By sunrise, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, cloudless autumn morning that turned Lake Michigan into a sheet of polished sapphire. But across the city of Chicago, an earthquake had leveled the criminal underworld.

At precisely eight in the morning, Tony Moretti gathered the heads of all remaining syndicates at the Blackwell headquarters on Michigan Avenue. I sat at the head of the boardroom table, dry, immaculate in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, the titanium drive sitting open before the assembled council. Beside me stood Viktor, armed, silent, and watchful.

Julian Vance had spent the early morning hours singing like a canary to my interrogators. Every offshore shell company, every corrupt hospital administrator, every dirty politician who had taken kickbacks to cover up Grace’s murder was documented with receipts, routing numbers, and signed affidavits.

""Gentlemen,"" I said, my voice echoing off the floor-to-ceiling glass walls overlooking the city skyline. ""The Valenti crew is dissolved. Their assets, territories, and shipping lanes are being absorbed directly into the Blackwell family trust. Dr. Ronald Hayes was located two hours ago boarding a ferry in Buenos Aires; he is currently in the custody of our South American associates and will spend the remainder of his natural life answering for every suture he placed in Grace’s body.""

None of the capos spoke. They looked at the documents on the table, then looked at me. They saw a man who had not only survived a coup, but who had eradicated every root of treason in a single twelve-hour blitz.

""We operate under a new rule from this day forward,"" I continued, standing up and buttoning my coat. ""Any enterprise involving human trafficking, medical exploitation, or harm to children carries an automatic death sentence. The Blackwell family is transitioning seventy percent of its liquid capital into legitimate biotech research, pediatric foundations, and private hospital networks. If anyone at this table objects to our new direction, you have sixty seconds to state your grievance.""

The room remained deathly still. Tony Moretti slowly stood up, placed his weathered right hand over his heart, and bowed his head slightly.

""Long live the Blackwell family,"" Tony rumbled.

One by one, every capo around the table stood, repeating the oath. The civil war that had threatened to turn Chicago into a slaughterhouse had ended before the morning rush hour.

I turned my back on the council and walked out of the boardroom. The empire was secure, but my real life was waiting thirty miles north behind the stone walls of Lake Forest.
