Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Snake

The accusation hung in the air like a live grenade. Marcus burst into a sharp, mocking laugh, looking around at the other council bosses to rally support. ""You're losing your mind, Elias! The pressure of the federal audits has finally cracked your skull! You're sitting here accusing your own second-in-command of torturing women in basements? Where is your proof? Where is the evidence?""

I tapped the screen of the tablet. Instantly, the high-definition monitors mounted along the club walls flickered to life.

First came the crisp traffic surveillance footage, tracking Marcus’s personal Escalade leaving his private garage, stopping at the industrial warehouse where Elena had been held, and finally pulling into the alley behind Warehouse 14. The timestamp was undeniable: 1:49 A.M. The camera captured his distinct, scarred profile perfectly through the side window as he opened the rear hatch and shoved Elena’s limp, bleeding form into the freezing snow.

Marcus’s face drained of every ounce of color. The smug arrogance evaporated, replaced by the cornered terror of a trapped rodent.

""Anyone can doctor a video,"" Marcus stammered, his voice rising in pitch. ""Deepfakes, digital manipulation—you staged this to purge me because I questioned your profit margins!""

""Did I stage this as well?"" I pressed another button.

Elena’s face appeared on every screen in the room. Even battered and bruised, her voice rang out with devastating moral authority. She held up Clara and Mia for the camera, showing the tiny hospital tags, before detailing Marcus’s exact words: how he intended to assassinate Elias Vance, sell the LaSalle shipping hubs to Don Vincent Moretti, and use the stolen federal ledger to blackmail the entire Chicago council into submission.

The older bosses turned to look at Marcus, their eyes filled with utter contempt. In our world, an ambitious soldier could be respected, but a traitor who sold his brothers to an outside syndicate while torturing innocent children was beyond redemption.

""You piece of filth,"" Don Carmine spat, shoving his chair back from the table. ""You brought the Morettis into our city? You laid hands on an auditor’s newborn children?""

Realizing the game was entirely lost, Marcus’s survival instincts took over. With blinding speed, his hand snapped up from beneath the table, clutching the ceramic firearm. He aimed the barrel straight at my forehead, his eyes wild with psychotic desperation.

""Nobody moves!"" Marcus shrieked, backing toward the exit doors. ""You think you've won, Elias? The Moretti hit squads are already mobilized in the city! By dawn, this entire club will be ashes! I should have put a bullet in that whore's skull the second those brats popped out of her!""

I didn't flinch. I didn't even reach for my weapon. I simply looked at him with the cold pity one reserves for a rabid dog before it is put down.

""You made three fatal mistakes, Marcus,"" I said calmly, taking a slow sip from the glass of water in front of me. ""First, you believed Julian Sterling was just an auditor, unaware that his family had deep ties to federal intelligence. Second, you believed a mother's will could be broken by a whip. And third... you forgot who wired the firing pins in this private lounge.""

Marcus pulled the trigger.

A dull, metallic click echoed off the obsidian walls.

Panic exploded across his face. He racked the slide desperately, attempting to chamber another round, but the ceramic mechanism had been magnetically disabled the moment he crossed the club’s entrance scanners.

Before he could take another breath, the double doors behind him blew inward. Lev and four heavily armored operators tackled Marcus to the floor with catastrophic force, shattering his collarbone against the hardwood. His weapon clattered harmlessly across the stone floor, stopping right beside my leather shoes.

I stood up, walked over to where Marcus lay pinned under the boots of my men, and crouched down beside his bleeding ear.

""You're not dying tonight, Marcus,"" I whispered in a voice so cold it seemed to freeze the blood dripping down his cheek. ""Death is far too gentle for what you did to those little girls. You are going to spend the rest of your unnatural life in a federal black site, testifying against every single Moretti operative who ever set foot in Illinois. And every morning you wake up behind those steel bars, you will remember that Elena Sterling outlived you.""
