Chapter 6 - Under Siege

""Take Vincent down into the concrete basement vault!"" I shouted, chambering a round into my tactical rifle. ""Lock the blast door behind you! Don't open it for anyone unless you hear my voice give the passcode!""

""Marcus, you can't fight all of them alone!"" Camille pleaded, tears streaming down her face.

""I don't intend to fight them alone,"" I said, tapping the lodge’s automated defense grid. ""I designed this house for Vincent to survive a war. Now go!""

The first volley of automatic gunfire shattered the front floor-to-ceiling windows, sending shards of glass raining across the hardwood floor. Dominic’s hit squad moved with tactical precision, expecting an easy mop-up operation against a wounded man and a panicked bodyguard.

They didn't expect the floorboards to trigger three directional claymore defenses along the front porch.

A deafening roar shook the cabin as the exterior charges detonated, flipping the lead SUV onto its roof in a massive fireball. The remaining shooters scattered into the treeline, firing wildly through the smoke.

I returned fire from behind the reinforced stone hearth, taking down two enforcers who tried to breach the side pantry. But there were too many of them. More headlights pierced through the darkness down the gravel road. Dominic was bringing his entire private army.

My ammunition was dwindling down to my last two magazines when the basement door cracked open.

""Marcus!"" It wasn't Camille.

It was Vincent.

He stood leaning heavily against the doorframe, his face completely pale, his hands clutching a heavy combat shotgun. His chest was tightly bound with blood-soaked bandages, but his eyes were blazing with the terrifying fire of a resurrected king.
