Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

On Adeline’s third birthday, the ranch was decorated with colorful balloons, paper lanterns, and a massive cake shaped like an alligator. Neighbors from the surrounding valley gathered, completely unaware that the generous, quiet gentleman hosting the party had once been the most feared godfather in the United States.
Vincent called Adeline up to the head of the long wooden table. In front of everyone, he presented her with a beautifully wrapped velvet box.
Adeline ripped through the ribbons with wild excitement, pulling out a small, glittering gold locket. Inside was a picture of Vincent, Camille, and Marcus smiling together on the ranch, alongside an engraved message: To Adeline, My Guardian Angel.
""Uncle Vin!"" she squealed, throwing her tiny arms tightly around his neck.
Vincent hugged her back, his eyes misting with genuine tears. He looked over her shoulder at Camille and me, his heart full of a peace he had never known in all his years of wealth and bloodshed.
""From this day forward,"" Vincent announced, his voice steady and warm, ""this ranch, and everything I own, is placed into an irrevocable trust for Adeline and Camille. You gave me back my life when I was bleeding to death in the dark. Now, my life belongs to keeping you safe and happy.""
Camille wiped away a tear, raising her glass in a toast. ""To family. The real kind.""
