Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The sunlight broke over the Manhattan skyline, painting Central Park in hues of gold and rust, but inside the private suite, the tension was suffocating.

Kieran’s men were everywhere. Two stood outside the suite’s door disguised as private hospital orderlies, while Marco patrolled the hallway with an assault rifle hidden beneath an oversized winter parka. Kieran himself never left the room for more than five minutes at a time, constantly taking encrypted calls on his satellite phone while keeping one watchful eye on Leo and the other on the door.

Leo had woken up in high spirits, mesmerized by the giant television screen playing animated movies. He was laughing—a sound I hadn't heard in six agonizing months.

"Look, Kieran!" Leo shouted, pointing at the screen. "The dragon breathes blue fire just like your eyes!"

Kieran actually chuckled, walking over to ruffle Leo’s soft cap. "Blue fire is the hottest kind, buddy. Remember that when you're fighting your own dragons."

My heart ached with a strange, sweet ache watching them together. How could a man accused of unspeakable underworld atrocities be so gentle with a sick little boy? It defied every warning I had ever given myself about keeping my distance.

Around midday, Dr. Vance returned to the room, carrying a thick medical folder. His expression was serious, but there was a faint flicker of hope in his eyes.

"We ran the expedited genetic sequencing through the international bone marrow registry," Dr. Vance announced, pulling Kieran and me toward the small private consultation alcove in the suite. "We found a donor match."

I gasped, pressing my hands over my mouth. "A full match?"

"A nine-out-of-ten match," Vance explained cautiously. "A young man living in Toronto, Canada. Under normal circumstances, donor negotiations, logistics, and harvesting take anywhere from four to six weeks."

"He doesn't have six weeks," Kieran cut in, his voice steely and precise. "His white blood cell count is plummeting, Vance. How fast can you get that marrow here if red tape isn't an issue?"

"If the donor agrees immediately and we can harvest within twenty-four hours... seventy-two hours minimum," Vance replied. "But cross-border transport of live biological tissue requires high-level clearances, and the donor has to be financially compensated for emergency leave and hospital stay."

"Marco," Kieran said without turning his head.

Marco appeared at his side like a ghost. "Boss?"

"Take my private jet to Toronto. Take whatever team of lawyers and doctors you need. Find this donor. Offer him fifty thousand dollars to walk into the Toronto General Hospital right now. If he wants a hundred thousand, pay him two hundred. Secure the marrow, load it onto the jet, and fly it directly to Teterboro. Clear the customs path with Senator Callahan."

"On it," Marco answered, turning on his heel and vanishing out the door.

Dr. Vance stood frozen, his eyes wide. "Mr. Blackwood... the legal procedures normally take—"

"Money and private jets bend legal procedures, Doctor," Kieran said smoothly. "Your only job is to ensure that when that tissue arrives, Leo is prepared for the transplant. Understand?"

"Understood, sir," Dr. Vance said, hurriedly retreating from the room.

I turned to Kieran, completely overwhelmed. "Two hundred thousand dollars? Kieran, this is too much. How could I ever repay you? I could work for you for the rest of my life and never pay back a fraction of this."

Kieran stepped close, trapping me gently between his powerful frame and the oak wall. He reached up, tucking a loose lock of dark hair behind my ear, his fingers lingering on the sensitive skin of my neck.

"Did I ask for repayment, Saraphina?" he whispered, his breath warm against my cheek.

"Then what is this?" I asked, my voice barely audible as my heart raced wildly.

"This is me making sure the only woman I give a damn about doesn't spend another night crying herself to sleep," he said softly, leaning in until our lips were inches apart. "I'm keeping your family alive because without you, that house in Westchester is just a cold concrete tomb."

Before his lips could touch mine, a sharp knock echoed through the suite door. One of Kieran's guards poked his head inside, his face pale and grim.

"Boss. We have a problem downstairs. Vincent Moretti just pulled up in front of the hospital with six cars."
