Chapter 4 - The Superhero in the Shadows

I glanced back at Kieran, terrified of how a ruthless crime boss might react to a sick child calling him a cartoon character. But Kieran didn't flinch. Slowly, the man who had ordered the downfall of criminal cartels walked toward the hospital bed and dropped down onto one knee, bringing his imposing frame down to Leo's eye level.

"I'm Kieran," he said, his voice softer than I had ever heard it. "And I'm not a superhero, buddy. But I work for your big sister."

Leo's eyes widened with pure childhood wonder. "Sari has a giant boss?"

"She does," Kieran replied, the corners of his lips curving into a genuine smile. "And she told me that the bravest kid in all of New York is staying in this room. But between you and me, I don't think this room is big enough for a real captain. How would you like a private suite with a sixty-inch television and your own game console?"

Leo gasped, clutching his favorite plush lion to his chest. "Can Sari stay with me?"

Kieran's gaze lifted to mine, his eyes smoldering with a quiet, undeniable promise. "She's never leaving your side again unless you want her to."

Within an hour, hospital staff moved like a synchronized military unit. Leo was transferred to the top-floor penthouse suite, complete with panoramic views of Central Park, a private kitchenette, and a pull-out bed fitted with the finest Egyptian cotton linens. Kieran's team brought in boxes of toys, comic books, and a brand-new Nintendo Switch before sunrise.

As Leo drifted back into a peaceful, pain-free sleep thanks to the new specialized medications Dr. Vance personally administered, I collapsed into one of the plush armchairs in the corner of the room. The sheer relief washed over me in violent waves, leaving me trembling from head to toe.

Kieran pulled a chair up next to mine, handed me a paper cup of warm, sweet tea, and sat silently until my shaking subsided.

"You can't pay for this without questions being asked," I whispered, holding the warm cup with both hands. "The authorities... the media... they track your finances."

"Let them look," Kieran dismissed coldly. "The Blackwood Foundation handles hundreds of philanthropic medical grants every quarter. On paper, your brother is merely a recipient of an emergency pediatric grant. In reality, he's under my personal protection. Which means anyone who tries to hurt you, or use his condition against you, answers to me."

"Why, Kieran?" I pressed, dropping the 'Mr. Blackwood' for the first time. "You don't do charity without a catch. What do you want from me?"

Kieran reached out, his warm thumb catching a stray tear rolling down my cheek. The intimacy of the gesture stole the breath right out of my lungs.

"I want your trust, Saraphina," he murmured, his gaze holding mine captive. "I want you to stop looking at me like I'm a monster waiting to strike. And when Leo is cured... I want a real chance to show you what kind of man I can be when I'm not running an empire."

Before I could answer, his phone buzzed violently on the glass table. Kieran glanced at the screen, and the gentle warmth on his face instantly turned into solid, unbreakable ice.

"Speak," Kieran answered coldly.

I couldn't hear the voice on the other end, but I heard the frantic panic in Marco's tone leaking through the speaker.

Kieran stood up, his jaw set in a rigid line. "I understand. Double the perimeter around Mount Sinai. Put eight men on this floor in plainclothes. If a single unfamiliar face steps off that elevator, put a bullet through their knee and ask questions later."

He hung up, tucking the phone away.

"What is it?" I asked, rising to my feet, terror instantly flooding my veins again.

"Vincent Moretti found out I left the estate without my full security detail," Kieran said calmly, checking the slide of a concealed firearm beneath his coat. "The Moretti family is making a move."
