Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Ghost

The silence in the library grew so heavy that the ticking of the antique grandfather clock sounded like drumbeats. Massimo turned around, his dark eyes narrowing as he tossed a small, discarded receipt onto the table in front of Elettra. It was from the high-end shipping port downtown—the exact terminal where millions of euros in contraband had mysteriously vanished over the past three months. Elettra stared at the paper, her breath catching in her throat. Her cover was completely blown, and there was nowhere left to run.

“You didn’t just steam silk dresses at that boutique, Elettra,” Massimo said quietly, stepping closer until he towered over the sofa. “You managed the digital inventory logistics for the entire eastern dock syndicate before it was wiped out six months ago. You’re the cyber-security analyst who disappeared off the grid the night your mentor was murdered by the rival Moretti-Vane alliance.” Bruno and Luciano exchanged sharp glances, the realization hitting them instantly: the invisible ghost they had been hunting for months to track down stolen syndicate funds had been serving them water all evening.

Elettra didn't try to deny it anymore. The tears she had fought back all night finally spilled over, not from fear, but from the exhausting weight of carrying a target on her back for half a year. “My mentor was killed because he refused to launder blood money for Vane,” she whispered, her voice trembling with suppressed rage and grief. “I stole the encrypted ledger files to keep them out of his hands, and I’ve been living on the run ever since, working minimum-wage jobs just to buy bread while Vane’s men tore the city apart looking for me.”

Instead of the violent retaliation she braced herself for, Bruno stepped forward and gently removed the empty coffee cup from her hand, his touch surprisingly tender for a man built for destruction. Luciano poured a fresh glass of water and handed it to her, his usual chilling smirk replaced by genuine empathy. Massimo looked down at her, the cold exterior of a mafia boss melting away to reveal a man who recognized fierce loyalty and unmatched courage when he saw it. The three brothers realized instantly that Elettra wasn’t an enemy—she was the ultimate weapon and the missing piece they needed to destroy their mutual enemy once and for all.
