Chapter 8 - The Choice in the Rain

"Alexander!"
The scream ripped out of my throat before my logical mind could stop it.
He froze on the sidewalk, his back stiffening, his hand hovering over the door of his awaiting vehicle. Marco, standing by the open passenger door, looked over the roof of the car, his weathered face watching me with bated breath.
I stepped out onto the porch, the cool breeze whipping strands of hair across my face. I held the silver ring tightly in my fist, the metal biting painfully into my skin.
"Do you really think walking away makes you a hero?" I demanded, my voice carrying across the quiet square. "Do you think abandoning your son is an act of bravery?"
Alexander turned slowly, his face etched with confusion and raw pain. "Claire... I brought gunfire to your doorstep. I almost got our child killed!"
"Because you were fighting a war alone!" I shouted, taking three furious steps toward him. "You have always fought alone! You made every decision for us without ever asking me! You decided to take over your father's syndicate to 'protect' me. You decided to go to Room 6018 to corner Sophia alone. You decided to carry the weight of an entire criminal empire on your shoulders while treating me like a fragile porcelain doll that would shatter if I learned the truth!"
Tears hot and angry spilled over my lashes, tracking down my cheeks.
"I didn't leave you because I stopped loving you, Alexander!" I sobbed, the truth tearing out of my chest like an uncaged beast. "I left because I was drowning in your silence! I left because I couldn't bear watching the gentle boy who used to sketch blueprints in the library turn into a stone-cold killer who wouldn't even look me in the eye! You thought you were protecting me from the darkness, but all you did was leave me alone in the dark!"
Alexander stared at me, completely stripped of his defenses. The great don of Chicago stood under the open sky, trembling like an accused child.
"And now," I choked out, pointing a trembling finger at him, "now that you finally see the damage your secrets caused, your brilliant solution is to run away again? To throw money at us and disappear into the shadows like a coward?"
"I am not a coward!" Alexander roared, taking two massive strides back toward me, his hands clenching into white-knuckled fists. "I would burn the world to ashes for you! I would tear my own heart out of my chest if it meant keeping Noah safe!"
"Then prove it!" I challenged, stepping right into his space until my chest was inches from his coat. "Don't run back to Chicago to die in an alley like your father. Don't leave me to raise our son with half a story and an empty chair at the dinner table. If you want to be his father... if you want to ever be my husband again... you dismantle that syndicate. You burn every illegal tie, you sign every cooperation agreement, and you walk away from the blood money forever. You become the man who carried my clay up four flights of stairs."
Alexander looked down into my eyes, seeing the fiery defiance that had made him fall in love with me seven years ago in an art studio.

"It will be dangerous," he whispered, his voice trembling with disbelief and sudden, desperate hope. "It will take everything I have. It might take months of war to cut those ties cleanly."
"Then you'd better get started," I whispered back, stepping forward and pressing the tarnished silver ring back into his open palm. "Because Noah starts preschool in two years. And his father is going to walk him through the front doors."
