Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The legal dismantling of Nathan Cole’s treacherous network was swift, brutal, and public. With the authentic ledgers recovered from Lorenzo’s vault, Damen’s corporate attorneys and forensic accountants systematically dismantled every shell corporation, offshore trust, and laundered account Nathan had established over two decades.
In a closed-door proceeding at the Suffolk County Superior Courthouse, federal prosecutors presented the overwhelming mountain of evidence. Nathan Cole, confined to a wheelchair due to his shattered knee and stripped of his designer suits, sat in an orange prison jumpsuit. His high-priced defense attorneys offered no argument; the paper trail established by Samuel Bennett and Lorenzo Raldi was an airtight masterpiece of forensic accounting.
Nathan was formally sentenced to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole for federal racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, arson resulting in death, and grand larceny. Evelyn Cross received twenty-five years in a maximum-security federal facility, her vast commercial real estate empire completely seized and liquidated.
On the afternoon following the sentencing, Damen Caruso visited Nathan in the holding facility beneath the federal courthouse. It was a stark, sterile concrete room divided by a thick pane of bulletproof glass.
Nathan sat across the divide, looking hollowed out, aged twenty years in a matter of days. He picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver with trembling hands.
Damen sat down and lifted his receiver. He looked at the man who had been his confidant, his advisor, and his shadow for half his lifetime.
“Why, Nathan?” Damen asked, his voice entirely devoid of anger. “You had more wealth than ten men could spend in a lifetime. You had my complete trust. Why destroy it all for ashes?”
Nathan let out a dry, raspy laugh that sounded like dead leaves blowing across pavement. “Trust? You never trusted anyone, Damen. You ruled through fear. Every decision, every expansion, every dollar was dictated by your name. I was the architect who designed your kingdom, but you were the god they bowed to. I wanted to see you break. I wanted to watch you wither away in that empty mansion, childless and miserable, while I controlled the levers from the darkness.”
Nathan leaned closer to the glass, his eyes wild with malice. “And you know what the worst part is, Damen? Lorenzo knew from the beginning. He knew I was poisoning him. He let me do it just to buy enough time for that girl to grow old enough to hold that recorder. He died laughing at me.”
Damen’s expression remained serene, untouched by Nathan’s venom. “Lorenzo died surrounded by honor, Nathan. You will die alone in an iron cage. Every cent you tried to steal has been used to establish the Samuel Bennett Educational Foundation and the Lorenzo Raldi Memorial Children's Hospital. Your legacy is not an empire. Your legacy is the funding for the very children you tried to destroy.”
Damen stood up, setting the receiver back onto its metal cradle.

“Damen! Don't walk away from me!” Nathan screamed, slamming his cuffed hands against the reinforced glass. “Damen! Look at me!”
Damen Caruso turned his back on the glass and walked out of the room into the bright daylight, never looking back again.
