Chapter 9 - The Sovereign Oath

The sun was high in the Arizona sky when Damon’s convoy returned to the estate.

Crews of workers were already repairing the iron gates, clearing the debris from the courtyard, and replacing the shattered windows. The compound had survived the storm, and the men patrolling the ramparts stood straighter, their loyalty to Damon cemented beyond question.

When Damon walked through the grand front doors, the interior of the mansion was quiet.

He walked past the conference room where less than twenty-four hours ago, a three-year-old child had bumped her suitcase against the walnut floor. The broken glass had been swept away; the table had been wiped clean.

He ascended the grand staircase toward the family terrace.

On the sunlit balcony overlooking the blooming rose gardens, Clara Castillo sat at a wrought-iron table with a cup of chamomile tea. She wore clean clothes, her hair neatly combed back, though dark circles still lingered under her exhausted eyes.

On the tiled floor beside her, Ruby was sitting cross-legged, using a set of colorful crayons to draw pictures on a large sketchpad. Her pink suitcase sat proudly beside her chair, adorned with two fresh floral stickers.

When Clara heard Damon’s heavy footsteps, she stood up instantly, her hands knotting together in nervous anticipation. But when she saw Damon walking toward them—cleaned, dressed in a fresh charcoal suit, whole and victorious—a profound sob broke from her chest.

“Mr. Damon,” she whispered, tears spilling over her eyelashes.

Damon raised a gentle hand. “It’s over, Clara. All of it. Emilio Delgado is dead. His network in Arizona has collapsed. And Julian Vance will spend the rest of his natural life behind federal bars.”

Clara sank back into her chair, pressing her hands over her face as four years of grief, fear, and suppressed trauma finally released in a torrent of cleansing tears. Damon walked to her side, resting a steady, paternal hand on her shoulder.

“Julian confessed to what happened to Mateo,” Damon added softly. “Mateo died a hero, Clara. He died protecting my people from an illegal shipment he refused to touch. His name will be honored across every room in this house for as long as I live.”

Ruby looked up from her coloring pad, hearing her mother’s weeping. She scrambled to her feet, trotting over with her stuffed rabbit held high.

“Mommy, don’t cry,” Ruby commanded with toddler authority. “Mr. Damon fixed the bad man.”

Damon crouched down until his eyes were level with the little girl’s face. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet jeweler’s pouch. From the pouch, he produced a brand-new, perfectly crafted replacement wheel made of polished brass and durable rubber.

With a miniature screwdriver from his pocket, Damon carefully attached the new wheel to the axle of Ruby’s pink suitcase, tightening the screw until it spun freely and smoothly.

“Good as new,” Damon said with a genuine, warm smile.

Ruby’s eyes went round with awe. She grabbed the handle of the suitcase and rolled it across the flagstones. It glided effortlessly without a single rattle or stutter.

She giggled—a bright, pure sound that seemed to chase the last remnants of violence completely out of the mansion’s walls.

“Thank you, Mr. Damon!” she cheered, throwing her tiny arms around his neck.

Damon hugged the child tightly, closing his eyes. In that simple, innocent embrace, the hardened mafia boss who had ruled through fear and power realized what his life had been missing for over a decade.

He looked up at Clara, who was watching them with profound gratitude.

“You’re not a maid in this house anymore, Clara,” Damon said, his voice ringing with absolute finality. “This morning, my lawyers completed the paperwork. You and Ruby are legal co-owners of the Reyes estate. Mateo’s family will never bow to anyone again.”
