Chapter 1 - The Whisper in the Shadows

""Sterling works for the Falcone family, Dante. And he told them the boy from the barn grew up to become their worst nightmare.""
Her words hit harder than the hollow-point bullet currently lodged between my fourth and fifth ribs. The Falcones were the syndicate that had gunned down my father, mother, and twelve-year-old sister in our Brooklyn brownstone fifteen years ago. I had spent every single waking second since claws-deep in blood, building an empire under the name Dante Moretti just to butcher every last one of them. For fifteen years, they believed the terrified boy named Bucky had drowned in the Hudson River.
Now, my cover wasn't just slipping; it was dragging Clara directly into the crosshairs.
""Look at me, Specs,"" I rasped, ignoring the fiery agony tearing through my torso as I reached up with a bloodied hand and cupped her trembling jaw. Her skin was warm, a sharp contrast to the cold antiseptic air of the loading bay. ""Did you tell him anything?""
""No,"" she breathed, tears welling in her exhausted hazel eyes. ""He confronted me twenty minutes before your black SUV crashed through the emergency bay gate. He showed me security footage of an old man in upstate New York being dragged out of his home. Dante... they have my grandfather.""
The world tilted on its axis. Arthur Vance. The kind, retired machinist who used to leave fresh milk and warm wool blankets beside his tractor shed without asking a single question about the half-dead fugitive hiding in his hay bales. He was eighty-two years old.
""He's alive,"" I said, my voice dropping into the icy register that usually made grown cartel bosses wet themselves. ""I swear to you on my mother's grave, Arthur is coming home. But right now, we have ninety seconds before Sterling's goons realize my security detail is the only thing standing between them and you.""
As if summoned by my words, the heavy metal door at the end of the corridor rattled violently. The latch clicked open.
Vincent stepped backward into the bay, his custom Beretta already raised, two spent shell casings clattering onto the linoleum floor. ""Boss! Unmarked tactical squad coming through the south corridor! They aren't hospital security—they're wearing Falcone colors!""
Clara froze, dropping a suture needle. ""What do we do?""
""We finish what we started in that barn fifteen years ago,"" I said, gritting my teeth as I forced myself to stand off the metal gurney. The wound flared with searing pain, but adrenaline flooded my veins like battery acid. I snatched her cardboard box off the floor with my left hand and wrapped my right arm around her waist. ""You keep your head down, you hold onto my belt buckle, and you don't look back.""
""Dante, you can't walk, let alone fight—""
""I don't need to walk, Specs,"" I whispered, pulling my own matte-black pistol from under my blood-soaked jacket. ""I just need to shoot.""
Vincent blew the emergency door off its hinges with a breaching charge. Dust, smoke, and flashing red emergency strobe lights engulfed the hallway. Bullets ripped through the drywall above our heads, showering us in white plaster dust. Clara gasped, burying her face into my chest, her fingers clutching the frayed denim of my shirt.
A hitman rounded the corner, rifle raised. Before he could squeeze the trigger, two suppressed rounds from my gun punched through his chest plate. He dropped like a bag of wet cement.
""Move!"" I barked to my men. ""South exit, car three! If a single scratch touches this woman, I'll skin every man on this detail alive!""
We fought our way down the freight ramp, the smell of burning rubber and cordite filling the damp night air. A heavily armored black Cadillac Escalade tore around the ambulance circle, its tires shrieking against wet pavement. The rear door flew open. Vincent shoved Clara inside first, and I tumbled in right behind her, collapsing onto the leather seats as automatic gunfire peppered the reinforced bulletproof glass.
The engine roared, throwing us back as the driver hit the gas, smashing through the hospital's security barrier and vanishing into the rainy Manhattan night.
Clara was hyperventilating, her hands covered in my fresh blood. She looked down at the dented silver mint tin still gripped in my hand, then up at my pale face.
May you like
""You're completely insane,"" she cried, her voice cracking. ""You were supposed to be an architect! You told me you were going to build bridges!""
I leaned my head back against the headrest, closing my eyes against the darkening edges of my vision. ""I built an empire instead, Specs. And tonight, I'm burning the city to keep you warm.""
