Chapter 7 - The Encrypted Ledger

The limestone manor transformed into a high-security trauma center the moment we pulled into the courtyard. Doctor Rossi, a trusted family physician on Vincent’s permanent payroll, rushed him straight into the medical wing on the ground floor. For three agonizing hours, I sat in the pristine hallway, holding the green tackle box in my lap, refusing to change out of my soot-stained clothes. Teresa had brought Ellie down, and I held my daughter tightly against my beating chest, listening to the muffled metallic clinks of surgical instruments behind the closed doors.

When Doctor Rossi finally emerged, pulling his blue surgical mask down, he gave a tired but reassuring nod. "The buckshot missed his vital organs. It tore up the deltoid and cracked two ribs, but there’s no internal hemorrhaging. He lost blood, but he’s strong as an ox. He's asking for you, Emily."

Handing Ellie back to Teresa for just a moment, I walked into the quiet recovery room. Vincent lay propped up on the bed, clean white bandages wrapped securely around his chest and shoulder. An IV line ran into his right arm, but the color was already returning to his face. On the rolling tray beside him sat Daniel's small, rugged external hard drive, which Marco had extracted from the tackle box.

A young man wearing thick glasses, Vincent's chief cyber-intelligence specialist, was tapping frantically on a laptop perched near the foot of the bed.

"Tell me what we have, Leo," Vincent instructed, his voice weak but razor-sharp.

Leo looked up, his eyes wide behind his lenses, filled with disbelief. "Boss... Daniel Hughes wasn't just taking photos of cracked concrete. He built an automated logging program that mirrored DeLuca’s shell corporation bank transfers. Daniel found out that DeLuca was skimming millions from federal infrastructure grants, laundering it through port shipping containers, and funneling bribes to seven city councilmen, four circuit judges, and the deputy chief of police." Leo paused, turning the laptop screen toward Vincent. "And there's more. The explosives used in the car bombing in Oak Park five years ago—the ones that killed Clara and Mia—the purchase order for the military-grade C4 was authorized directly from DeLuca's offshore Cayman account. Daniel found the transaction receipt buried in an offshore holding manifest."

A dead, suffocating silence fell over the room. For five years, Vincent had fought in the shadows, knowing in his heart who had killed his sister and niece, but unable to strike directly without bringing the full weight of corrupt federal and state authorities down on his family. Now, lying on a hard drive tucked behind my radiator, was the indisputable, ironclad proof of every crime Sal DeLuca had committed over a decade.

"It's over," I whispered, the weight of seven months of mourning, terror, and poverty finally crumbling off my shoulders. "We can take this to the FBI."

"The local FBI field office is compromised," Vincent said, his jaw tightening into iron. "If we hand this over to the Chicago office, it disappears into an evidence incinerator before sunrise. We go directly to the Assistant Attorney General in Washington. Leo, make an encrypted clone of this drive. Send the primary key to the federal prosecutor's secure server, but hold the master decryption key until I give the order."

"Yes, Mr. Moretti," Leo replied, grabbing his laptop and hurrying out the door to execute the command.

Vincent turned his gaze toward me, pointing with his good arm to the chair beside his bed. "Come here, Emily."

I sat down, my hands trembling. Without hesitation, Vincent reached out and took my fingers into his warm, scarred palm. "Daniel was an extraordinary man. He gave his life trying to bring that monster down. Because of him, and because of your courage tonight, Clara and Mia will finally have justice. And your daughter will never have to hide in a restaurant closet again."

"Vincent," I said softly, looking down at his bandaged chest. "What happens to you now? When DeLuca realizes the drive is gone... he won't stop."

"He knows he's cornered," Vincent answered, a dark, lethal promise gleaming in his eyes. "A cornered predator always does the same thing. He makes a reckless, final mistake. And when he comes for me, I will be waiting."
