Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

The drive to Vincent’s private estate on the outskirts of Chicago occurred in absolute, breathless silence. The black armored SUV glided past high wrought-iron security gates, through dense pine groves, finally pulling up before a sprawling limestone manor that looked more like an impenetrable fortress than a home. High stone walls, state-of-the-art surveillance cameras, and armed guards patrolling the perimeter with trained German Shepherds made it abundantly clear: this was a sanctuary built to withstand a siege.
Inside, the cold marble architecture was surprisingly softened by deep wool rugs, burning fireplaces, and rich mahogany bookshelves stretching toward vaulted ceilings. A silver-haired woman named Teresa, who had been Vincent's housekeeper since his childhood, was waiting in the grand foyer. The moment she saw Ellie bundled in my arms, her strict, formal demeanor dissolved into warm grandmotherly delight.
"Follow me, child," Teresa said gently, leading me up an sweeping staircase into a massive, sunlit suite on the second floor.
When Teresa pushed open the double doors of the room, my breath caught in my throat. It wasn't a standard guest bedroom; it was a fully furnished, newly staged luxury nursery connected to a master suite. There was a hand-carved white crib with plush silk bedding, shelves lined with brand-new baby clothes, wooden toys, boxes of diapers stacked neatly by size, and a soft velvet rocking chair beside a panoramic window overlooking the manicured winter gardens.
"Did... did Mr. Moretti prepare this today?" I asked, tears stinging my eyes as I walked across the plush carpet, running my fingers over the crib's smooth rails.
"Mr. Moretti had a team working on this since midnight," Teresa replied softly, turning down the pristine white duvet on the master bed. "After he found you and this little angel in that terrible closet, he didn't sleep a wink. He made calls across the country to track down Daniel's records, and he had decorators rush this furniture in at five in the morning. He hasn't allowed a child in this wing since Clara and little Mia were taken from him." Teresa paused, placing a warm hand on my shoulder. "He is a hard man, Emily. A ruthless man when he deals with his enemies. But he carries a wound that has never healed. You and this baby are bringing light into a house that has been dead for five years."
After Teresa left to bring up a hot supper, I gave Ellie a warm bath in the en-suite marble tub, dressed her in a clean yellow onesie from the closet, and rocked her to sleep in the velvet chair. For the first time in seven grueling months, my baby was warm, fed, and completely safe. I didn't have to wonder if the electricity would be shut off tomorrow. I didn't have to worry about my abusive landlord hammering on the door.
Yet, a deep, gnawing anxiety kept me on edge. Vincent Moretti was the underworld kingpin of the city. Men bled at his feet without a blink of his eyes. What was his real price? Nobody gives away a fortress, luxury, and protection for free.
A soft knock interrupted my racing thoughts. Vincent stepped into the nursery doorway, holding a thick manila folder under his arm. He had changed into a comfortable dark cashmere sweater, shedding the intimidating aura of the mob boss to look like a tired, somber man carrying the weight of the world on his broad shoulders.
"She's asleep?" he asked quietly, glancing toward the crib.
"She went down without a fight," I whispered, standing up and smoothing down my worn jeans. "Mr. Moretti... this is too much. The room, the clothes, the guards. I can't accept this. I don't have anything to give you in return."
Vincent entered the room, his footsteps silent on the rug, and placed the manila folder on the side table beside my chair. "I didn't bring you here to negotiate a transaction, Emily. Daniel saved lives before he was killed. Did he ever tell you about the safety logs he kept on his personal hard drive?"
I frowned, searching my memory through the haze of grief from seven months ago. "Daniel had an old external hard drive he kept in his tackle box in the hall closet. He told me it contained his freelance portfolio and project backups. He told me never to throw it away, no matter what."
Vincent’s jaw tightened, his dark eyes flaring with sudden, sharp recognition. "That tackle box is still in your apartment?"
May you like
"Yes," I whispered. "Under the winter coats."
"Sal DeLuca has already sent a demolition crew to your apartment building under the guise of an emergency plumbing overhaul," Vincent said, tapping the folder. "They are tearing the walls apart looking for that drive right now. If they find it, DeLuca destroys the evidence, pays off the mayor, and gets away with Daniel’s murder, Clara’s murder, and the deaths of seven other union workers." Vincent leaned in, his voice vibrating with absolute conviction. "That drive doesn't just clear Daniel's name. It has the encrypted manifests of DeLuca's weapons trafficking through the Chicago docks. It is the key to destroying DeLuca’s entire empire forever."
