Chapter 7 - The Altar of Ruin

The sight of her flinching from his shadow struck Adrian harder than any bullet he had ever survived.
He did not step across the threshold.
He remained on the snowy porch, the winter wind whipping the edges of his damp clothes.
“I didn't come to take anything, Claire,” he whispered, his voice cracking and breaking completely.
Then, the man who had never bowed his head to rival bosses, federal judges, or armed cartels sank slowly to his knees on the freezing porch wood.
He dropped his head, his hands resting flat against the threshold, shaking visibly in the snow.
Claire froze, staring down at him in stunned disbelief.
In ten years of knowing Adrian Mercer, she had seen him bleed, seen him conquer, and seen him command hundreds of armed men with a single flick of his fingers.
She had never seen him kneel.
“Adrian... what are you doing?” she whispered, tears finally breaking free and spilling over her pale cheeks.
“Victor is in custody,” Adrian choked out, unable to lift his eyes to meet hers.
“The Langford photograph was a setup paid for by Moretti. Dr. Vance was vetted and cleared two hours ago.”
“I was blind, Claire. I was so terrified of being the fool who loved too much that I turned into the monster who destroyed his own family.”
He reached inside his coat with trembling fingers, pulling out the folded ultrasound image Dr. Grant had given him.
He laid it gently on the wooden floor between them, beside the shattered pieces of her ceramic mug.
“Elias told me about the heartbeats,” he wept, the tears freezing on his cheeks in the biting night air.
“Two heartbeats. And I almost let the cold take all three of you.”
Claire looked down at the photograph resting on the floorboards, then at the broad shoulders of the man shaking in the snow before her.
For four months, she had dreamed of hearing him say those words.
She had dreamed of him walking through the door and begging for her forgiveness.
Now that he was here, broken on the floor, she felt no triumph.
Only the profound, aching grief of two people who had nearly bled to death in the dark.

“Get up, Adrian,” she said softly, her voice trembling in the cold wind.
“You'll catch pneumonia out there.”
