Chapter 4 - The Viper's Ledger

Victor forced an easy, practiced chuckle, but his throat bobbed as he swallowed hard.

“Adrian, you’re exhausted. The stress of the split is getting to you. Dr. Vance was a threat—we verified his connections to the east-side syndicate.”

Adrian stood up slowly, towering over his lieutenant, the physical presence that had crushed rebellions returning in full force.

“Dr. Vance is a sixty-year-old geneticist who specializes in high-risk pregnancies,” Adrian whispered, each word dropping like lead.

“And my wife is carrying twins.”

Victor’s pupils dilated in sudden, unmistakable panic.

He took half a step backward, but two of Adrian’s personal enforcers stepped through the kitchen entryway, their weapons drawn and leveled at Victor's chest.

“Search him,” Adrian ordered.

Before Victor could reach into his coat, the enforcers slammed him against the marble island, disarming his Glock and emptying his pockets onto the counter.

Among the contents was an encrypted burner phone, a set of keys to a private hangar at Midway Airport, and a wire transfer confirmation slip from an offshore bank in Panama.

Adrian picked up the transfer slip, reading the account details under the kitchen lights.

Two million dollars, deposited forty-eight hours after the photograph of Claire had been delivered to his desk.

The sender was not the Colombo family.

It was Paul Moretti—the man who had lost the southern shipping contracts to Adrian six months earlier.

“You manufactured the entire affair,” Adrian said, his voice flat, dead, and terrifyingly calm.

“You knew that the only thing that could make me blind enough to discard my wife was the suspicion of betrayal.”

Victor struggled against the counter, his lip curling into a desperate, venomous sneer.

“She was making you weak, Adrian!” Victor spat, saliva flying from his mouth.

“You stopped expanding! You wanted to go legitimate, buying logistics hubs and building community clinics because of her!”

“We built this empire on blood and fear, and you were ready to turn it into a charity because a schoolteacher kissed your scars!”

Adrian leaned in until his face was inches from Victor's trembling cheek.

“She didn't make me weak, Victor,” Adrian murmured softly into his ear.

“She was the only reason I let you live this long.”

Adrian turned his back, waving a dismissive hand toward the enforcers.

“Take him to the basement at Pier 4. He doesn't see daylight until I have my wife back in this house.”
