Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Grounds

The meeting in the courtyard had been an elaborate, bloody distraction.

Dominic Salieri had never intended to negotiate a peace treaty. He had sent three disposable goons to Calder’s front gates specifically to draw Vincent, Marcus, and the primary security perimeter away from the blind spots on the estate’s southern boundary.

While Vincent was interrogating the decoy envoy in the courtyard rotunda, two professional infiltrators hired out of South Boston had scaled the perimeter wall using carbon-fiber ladders, slipped through the dense maple woods, and breached the manor’s secondary service elevator.

Their objective had originally been Vincent’s private safe in the study. But as they crept down the fourth-floor corridor, the muffled sound of a child’s laughter had changed the mission parameters entirely. A hostage was infinitely more valuable than bearer bonds.

The double doors burst open with a sickening crash of splintering wood.

Two men in black tactical gear and ballistic masks spilled into the bedroom, suppressed pistols raised.

“Don't scream, and don't make a sound,” the lead intruder hissed, his Boston accent thick and harsh behind the fabric mask. “Grab the kid. Move!”

Nora didn't hesitate. She didn't cry out. The mother’s instinct that had kept her child safe for three years took over with feral intensity.

She grabbed the heavy marble lamp from the nightstand, ripping the cord from the wall, and hurled it with all her strength directly into the face of the first man. The heavy stone smashed against his cheekbone, sending him stumbling backward with a muffled curse of pain.

“Ellie, under the bed! Now!” Nora screamed at the top of her lungs, throwing herself directly at the second man as he lunged forward.

Her fingers clawed at his mask, her knees driving into his groin with desperate, frantic violence. The intruder grunted in shock, dropping his weapon, but he outweighed her by over a hundred pounds. He slammed an open palm across her jaw, sending her crashing hard against the mahogany dresser. White sparks exploded behind Nora’s eyes.

Ellie scrambled underneath the dust ruffle of the massive bed, clutching the oversized suit jacket around her tiny shoulders, tears streaming down her terrified face. “Mommy!”

“Shut up, you little rat!” the first intruder snarled, wiping blood from his broken nose as he dropped to his knees to drag Ellie out by her ankles.

Downstairs, the sharp crash from the fourth floor echoed down the manor’s central air shafts.

Vincent Calder froze mid-sentence in the courtyard rotunda. His head snapped toward the upper windows of the main house. Marcus and the other guards barely had time to react before Vincent was moving. He drew the custom black 1911 pistol from his shoulder holster with terrifying speed, sprinting across the gravel courtyard like a predator that had caught the scent of blood.

“Lock the gates! Kill the decoys! Upstairs, now!” Vincent roared over his shoulder.

He took the grand staircase three steps at a time, his heart hammering against his ribs with a sickening, primal terror he had never experienced in all his years of gangland warfare. If a single hair on that little girl’s head was harmed—if Nora was hurt—he would burn the entire city of Boston to ash.

He reached the fourth-floor landing just as a muffled gunshot echoed through the corridor.
