Chapter 7 - The True Ledger

Pandemonium erupted in the ballroom. Men shouted, drawing semi-automatic pistols and leveling them at each other across the tables as panic surged through the trapped mob bosses. The Castiglione capos leaped to their feet, overturning tables to use as barricades, while Dante Moretti screamed for his security detail to breach the steel blast doors.

""Kill him!"" Moretti roared, pointing a shaking finger directly at Ezra. ""Wipe the whole Calhoun line out! Do it now!""

Before Moretti’s men could clear their holsters, the glass Phoenix on the head table began to glow with blinding intensity. Ren had not just engineered an acoustic chamber; she had coated the inner vacuum with a thin film of compressed strontium aluminate that reacted to the specific acoustic stress of the resonance frequency. The bird burst into a brilliant, emerald flare that blinded everyone within twenty feet.

Moretti stumbled backward, crying out and clutching his eyes.

In that split second of total disorientation, Ezra moved with terrifying speed. He vaulted across the overturned table, grabbed Moretti by his silk collar, and slammed him down across the marble floor with his knee pressed hard into the old man's chest. Ezra’s snub-nosed revolver was pressed firmly beneath Moretti's chin before the bodyguard to his left could even blink.

""Drop your weapons!"" Julian Vane’s voice cracked like thunder across the room. From the raised orchestra balcony above, twenty of Calhoun’s personal riflemen appeared, their red laser sights painting dozens of crimson dots across the foreheads of Moretti’s frozen gunmen.

The room went instantly, petrifyingly still. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed.

""Touch the valve, Ren,"" Ezra commanded, not taking his eyes off the terrified face of his underboss.

Ren walked calmly through the shattered china and spilled wine, her emerald gown trailing behind her like royalty crossing a battlefield. She reached the pedestal, grasped the brass dial at the base of the sculpture, and gave it a quarter turn clockwise.

With a soft hiss of escaping vacuum pressure, the tail of the Phoenix slid open along an invisible seam. A heavy, blackened iron cylinder slid smoothly out of the crystal cavity and rolled onto the tablecloth.

""That’s not diamonds,"" a Castiglione elder gasped from behind his overturned chair. ""What is that?""

""It’s the original payroll and shipping registry from the Drell Foundry,"" Ren announced, her voice ringing clear, steady, and utterly unshakable across the silent hall. ""Recovered from the personal safety deposit box of Thomas Calhoun.""

She picked up the cylinder, broke the wax seal with her thumb, and pulled out a stack of fire-resistant carbon ledgers. She held them up for the entire room to see.

""In 2004, Dante Moretti set up an offshore shell company called Ironstone Logistics,"" Ren said, turning the pages with cold, deliberate poise. ""He used the Drell Foundry furnaces to melt raw gold and cast hollow glass spheres to move stolen diamonds from Antwerp through the Port of New York. When the master glassblower—my father, Gregory Vance—discovered the smuggling ring and threatened to go to the port authorities, Moretti didn't just kill him. He locked the furnace pressure valves from the outside and burned down the building, killing Thomas Calhoun and eight other working men to erase his paper trail.""

She looked down at Moretti, whose eyes were wide with a terror so absolute his skin had turned the color of damp ash.

""You thought you killed every Vance in that fire,"" Ren whispered, her voice slicing through the heavy silence. ""You thought my father's blood ended in that ash heap. But I survived, Dante. And I learned everything he knew about the flame.""

A collective murmur of disgust and shock rippled through the assembled mob capos. In the underworld, violence was business, but killing your own boss and wiping out an entire working foundry for personal greed was an unforgivable violation of the Commission's oldest law.

The eldest don of the Castiglione family stood up slowly, tucking his gun back into his shoulder holster. He looked at Moretti with pure contempt.

""You used our shipping docks to cover your private slaughter, Dante?"" the old don spat onto the floor. ""You lied to the Commission for twenty years and told us Thomas Calhoun was killed by city inspectors?""

""It's a lie!"" Moretti choked out, the steel of Ezra's barrel pressing deeper into his throat. ""She's a nameless whore from the docks! She forged the papers!""

""The signatures are notarized by your own dead brother, Dante,"" Ezra whispered, his finger tightening on the trigger. ""And the ink was tested yesterday by my federal contacts. It’s over.""

May you like

Ezra stood up, hauling Moretti up by his lapels with one hand like a ragdoll. He turned the shivering traitor toward the massive arched window that overlooked the freezing, black waters of the Atlantic below.

""Twenty years ago, you watched a building burn and called it progress,"" Ezra said into his ear. ""Tonight, you pay the rent.""
