Chapter 10 - The Sovereign's Promise

The sun climbed higher into the clear blue sky over Manhattan, washing the penthouse in brilliant, unbroken radiance.

Lily waved from the terrace, signaling that she was heading into the guest bedroom to take a long, well-deserved nap. Dr. Vance packed his medical bag, gave Dominic a respectful nod, and quietly exited through the private foyer.

The vast apartment became completely still, filled only with the faint hum of the city far below.

Nora stood by the terrace glass, looking out over the sprawling empire of glass and concrete Dominic ruled. For three years, she had felt like an outsider peeking through the keyhole of a dangerous kingdom.

Now, the heavy door was wide open, and the king was standing right behind her.

"You should sleep," Dominic said, stepping up beside her, his shoulder lightly brushing hers. "You haven't rested in thirty hours."

"I don't think I could sleep if I tried," Nora replied, turning her head to look at his sharp, handsome profile. "My mind is still running through the shipping manifests for next week."

Dominic chuckled—a deep, genuine sound that crinkled the corners of his dark eyes. It was a sound she had heard perhaps three times in three years.

"Still working," he murmured, shaking his head with quiet disbelief.

"It’s what you pay me for, Mr. Falcone."

Dominic turned fully toward her, closing the small space between them until she had to tilt her head back to meet his gaze.

"I don't want you to work for me anymore, Nora," he said.

Nora’s breath caught in her throat. The old fear, cold and sharp, flickered briefly in her chest. "Are you firing me?"

"No," Dominic whispered, reaching out to cup her jaw with his large, warm hand, his fingers resting gently beneath her ear. "I am releasing you from your contract."

"And if I don't want to be released?" she asked, her heart pounding against her ribs like a runaway train.

"Then I am offering you a new position," he said, his thumb brushing softly across her lower lip. "One with no salary, no resignation clauses, and no secrets."

"What title comes with that?" Nora whispered, leaning imperceptibly into the warmth of his palm.

"My partner," Dominic answered, his voice steady, deep, and ringing with absolute truth. "My equal. The only woman who will ever stand beside me in this house."

He leaned down slowly, giving her every second to pull away, to step back, to choose the safety of distance.

Nora didn't move. She closed her eyes, reached up with both hands, and buried her fingers into the soft hair at the nape of his neck.

When his lips met hers, the last remnants of fear, coldness, and isolation melted away like frost under a blazing sun.

His kiss was fierce, possessive, yet filled with an aching reverence that took her breath away. He pulled her against his chest, holding her as though she were the most precious, fragile treasure in a world built on stone and iron.

When they finally parted, Dominic rested his forehead against hers, their breaths mingling in the quiet morning air.

"No more running, Nora," he promised against her lips.

May you like

Nora looked out at the gleaming towers of Manhattan, then back into the fierce, devoted eyes of the man who had brought an army to the water just to keep her safe.

"No more running, Dominic," she whispered, a radiant, triumphant smile lighting up her face. "I'm already home."
