Chapter 1 - The Sovereign of Shadows

Dominic did not move away from the heavy oak door. His tall, formidable frame remained an impenetrable wall against the outside world.

The rain beat against the Manhattan glass in relentless waves, drowning the city in liquid darkness. Inside the quiet penthouse bedroom, the atmosphere turned thick enough to suffocate.

"You," Dominic repeated, his voice dropping into a register that made the floorboards hum. "You were going to trade your life to Victor Rostov."

Nora tightened her hands into fists until her fingernails bit into her palms. "He gave me a choice, Dominic. The digital keys to your shipping ports, or my presence in Red Hook."

"And you chose to hand yourself over rather than steal from me," he said.

It was not a question. It was an indictment of her absolute foolishness, laid out under the amber light of the bedside lamp.

"I spent three years protecting your accounts, your schedule, and your empire," Nora whispered, meeting his dark, piercing gaze. "I couldn't betray you. But Lily is nineteen, Dominic. She’s studying pre-med at Columbia. She doesn't even know what a front company looks like."

Dominic stepped away from the door, his movements fluid, deliberate, and chillingly controlled. He picked up the burner phone lying on the white bedspread.

He studied the picture of the terrified girl in the oversized yellow sweatshirt. His sharp jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles in his cheek twitched beneath the skin.

"Rostov thinks because I don't flaunt my family, I don't protect my house," Dominic murmured.

He tapped the screen twice, memorizing the Red Hook coordinates. Then, without a word, he tossed the phone onto the nightstand and reached for the heavy silver cufflink resting on the mahogany dresser.

"Dominic, please," Nora pleaded, stepping into his path, her hands shaking as she tried to catch his wrist. "If Rostov sees you or your men, he will kill her before you clear the perimeter. You don't know him."

Dominic looked down at her hands on his forearm. For three years, their relationship had been defined by immaculate boundaries—crisp morning briefings, signed manifests, and late-night coffee poured across mahogany desks.

He had never touched her without gloves, and she had never dared cross the invisible boundary between an executive assistant and the head of the Five Points Syndicate.

Slowly, Dominic covered her cold, trembling fingers with his warm, calloused palm. The sheer heat of his skin sent an involuntary tremor down her spine.

"I wrote the treaty that gave Victor Rostov the Red Hook piers five years ago, Nora," he said softly, his voice steady as iron. "I know how many breaths he takes between lies. I know which ear he hears out of, and I know how long it takes his men to reload."

He turned her hands over, gently inspecting the faint red marks where her fingernails had dug into her skin.

"You kept your sister hidden from me because you thought I was a monster," Dominic murmured, his dark eyes searching hers.

"I kept her hidden because you are a king in a bloody war," Nora answered, her voice breaking. "And now she is trapped in your graveyard."

"She is not in a graveyard," Dominic said, stepping past her toward the master closet. "She is in my city. And nobody touches what belongs to my house."
