Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Waltz

Six months later.

The summer sun poured through the arched windows of the grand ballroom of the DeLuca estate, illuminating crystal chandeliers, floral arrangements of white lilies, and polished oak floors that gleamed like glass.

The music room on the second floor was no longer locked. In fact, its doors were permanently propped open, filled daily with the sound of laughter, conversation, and soaring piano melodies.

Dr. Mercer’s surgery on Maya’s knee had been a complete triumph. After months of careful physical therapy—supervised daily by a relentlessly attentive Roman—the swelling had vanished, the torn ligaments had healed, and Maya walked without the slightest hint of a limp.

Standing near the grand French doors leading to the rose gardens was Elena. She was still in her wheelchair, but her face was radiant, her cheeks flushed with health and happiness. She wore a stunning emerald silk dress, her lap covered in sheet music for an upcoming recital at the Chicago Symphony Center—an audition she had finally scheduled with Roman’s encouragement.

Sitting beside Elena at the newly tuned Steinway grand piano was Maya.

Maya wore a flowing, ivory silk gown that caught the afternoon light like water. Her dark hair was styled in elegant curls, free of the messy knots and cleaning aprons of her past life. On her left ring finger sat a breathtaking diamond ring, its band engraved with the DeLuca family crest.

“You’re rushing the tempo again,” Elena teased, nudging Maya’s arm playfully.

“I’m nervous,” Maya admitted with a bright, breathless laugh. “I’m used to holding a mop handle, not playing duets in front of three hundred guests.”

“You’ll be fine,” Elena smiled, her eyes brimming with genuine affection. “Besides, your dance partner is waiting.”

The double doors of the ballroom opened, and Roman stepped inside.

He wore a tailored black tuxedo, looking every bit the formidable South Side Don, but the moment his gaze found Maya, the hardened lines of his face melted into an expression of pure, unconditional adoration.

The three hundred guests—allied families, city officials, and close friends—parted respectfully as Roman walked toward the piano.

He extended a gloved hand to Maya. “May I have this dance, Mrs. DeLuca?”

Maya’s heart swelled with joy. “Only if you promise to lead better than the mop.”

A ripple of warm laughter moved through the ballroom. Elena laughed the loudest, her hands resting gracefully over the piano keys.

As Elena began to play—a rich, sweeping waltz filled with light, hope, and vibrant life—Roman drew Maya onto the center of the dance floor.

He wrapped one strong arm securely around her waist, lifting her hand in his. Maya stepped forward without hesitation, her bad knee holding strong, moving in perfect, effortless harmony with his stride.

They spun across the sunlit marble, surrounded by the music that had once been lost forever.

“Are you happy, Maya?” Roman whispered, his dark eyes looking down into hers with fierce tenderness.

Maya rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat—the heartbeat of the man who had pulled her from the shadows and given her a fortress of love.

May you like

“More than I ever dreamed possible,” Maya replied, smiling up at him as they spun beneath the crystal chandeliers.

The house that had once been defined by cold, suffocating silence was now alive with music, laughter, and an unbreakable love that would echo through its halls forever.
