Chapter 1 - The Broken Silver

The shattering of Alessandro Moretti’s crystal flute echoed across the marble floor of Leto like a gunshot in a crowded cathedral. Eleanor Harding froze, her breath trapped high in her chest. The heavy antique silver locket rested against her exposed collarbone, cold and unyielding, carrying the weight of a past she had never been allowed to know. Around them, the restaurant seemed to plunge into an unnatural silence. The discreet hum of billionaire chatter died instantly. Men in tailored black suits subtly reached beneath their lapels, their knuckles whitening against concealed leather holsters.

Yet nobody moved to attack. All eyes were locked on Isabella Moretti, the feared matriarch of New York’s deadliest syndicate, who was now kneeling on the wet floor amidst puddles of vintage champagne. Her trembling fingers reached toward Eleanor’s neck, not with violence, but with a reverent terror that bordered on madness.

""You’re alive,"" Isabella rasped, tears carving wet ravines through her powdered cheeks. ""God in heaven, you survived the fire.""

Eleanor stumbled backward, her instinct for survival kicking in. ""Ma'am, please, I don't know who you think I am. I’m just a server. My shift ends at midnight. I need to go.""

""Stay where you are,"" Alessandro commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a freshly sharpened blade. He stepped out from the velvet booth, towering over her, his charcoal suit casting a long shadow across her trembling frame. Up close, his dark eyes held an intensity that could paralyze a grown soldier. He looked down at his sobbing grandmother, then up at Eleanor, his gaze raking over her face as if searching for a ghost. ""Who gave you that pendant?""

""I told you, it was in my baby blanket when I was dropped off at St. Jude’s!"" Eleanor cried, clutching the silver willow branches tight against her chest. ""They said my mother was found dead in the East River. That’s all I know!""

Alessandro didn't answer right away. He knelt beside Isabella, lifting the fragile woman to her feet with practiced care, though his eyes never left Eleanor. ""Richard,"" he called quietly without turning his head.

The restaurant manager hurried over, sweating profusely and bowing his head like a condemned prisoner. ""Y-yes, Don Alessandro?""

""Close the restaurant. Empty every table. Anyone who speaks a word of what they saw tonight will forfeit their tongue. And bring her to the sedan.""

May you like

""Wait, no!"" Eleanor protested, panicking as two stone-faced bodyguards flanked her immediately. ""You can't do this! I have an apartment, I have a cat to feed, I have—""

""You have nothing in this city that I cannot erase or replace in five seconds,"" Alessandro murmured, stepping dangerously close. The scent of cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and rain washed over her. ""Right now, your only job is to stay alive long enough to explain how you possess the crest of a woman who was supposedly buried twenty-four years ago. Get in the car.""
