Chapter 8 - The Gala at the Drake

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a glittering sea of black tuxedos, silk gowns, crystal chandeliers, and clinking champagne flutes. Chicago’s elite—politicians, billionaires, architects, and philanthropists—mingled under the golden vaulted ceilings.

When the double doors opened and Ethan Caldwell walked in, heads turned immediately.

Ethan looked devastatingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo. But what caused the room to fall into an awed hush was the woman on his arm.

Claire was breathtaking. She wore an emerald green silk gown that draped flawlessly to the floor, complementing her porcelain skin and dark hair swept up in an elegant chignon. Around her neck hung a simple, brilliant diamond pendant that Ethan had sent to her home that afternoon, accompanied by a handwritten note that read: To courage.

Whispers rippled through the perimeter of the room. Several Caldwell Urban Works executives were present, and their jaws dropped in unison.

""Is that... Bennett?"" one of the senior vice presidents muttered to his wife. ""From cost estimation?""

""She isn't an estimator anymore, darling,"" his wife whispered back, admiring Claire's poise. ""She’s running the entire capital portfolio.""

Across the crowded floor, standing near the champagne fountain, stood Vanessa Caldwell.

She had managed to secure an invitation through a socialite friend, desperately hoping to network her way back into high society before news of the pending federal wire fraud investigation broke publicly. She wore a crimson dress, her glass trembling in her hand as she watched Ethan guide Claire toward the center of the ballroom.

Unable to contain her boiling venom, Vanessa intercepted them near the orchestra terrace.

""Ethan,"" Vanessa sneered, stepping directly into their path. Her makeup was thick, but it couldn't hide the dark, exhausted circles under her eyes. ""How charming. You brought the help to the city’s most prestigious charity ball. Are you going to have her calculate the floral costs between courses?""

Claire felt Ethan’s arm tense beneath her fingers, but before he could speak, Claire stepped forward on her own.

She stood tall, looking directly down at Vanessa, her expression cool, composed, and completely devoid of fear.

""Actually, Vanessa,"" Claire said, her voice smooth and carrying effortlessly over the string quartet, ""the floral budget is fully audited. Just like the steel contracts for V&C Logistics. I understand the United States Attorney’s office served subpoenas on your offshore shell accounts yesterday morning. I hope you aren't drinking too much champagne; legal retainers are remarkably expensive.""

Several nearby socialites gasped, quickly taking two steps backward away from Vanessa, as if fraud were contagious.

Vanessa’s face turned an ugly shade of magenta. ""You arrogant little—""

""Step away from us, Vanessa,"" Ethan commanded, his voice cutting through the air like a steel blade. ""You were stripped of your corporate credentials, and as of five o'clock today, the board has formally initiated the buyout of your family shares. You are no longer welcome at our table. In this room, or anywhere else.""

A security officer, notified by the event organizer, appeared at Vanessa’s elbow.

""Ms. Caldwell, your invitation has been revoked by the host. Please exit through the lobby.""

Without a single word left to weaponize, stripped of her influence, her money, and her family name, Vanessa turned and fled into the night, the heavy velvet curtains closing behind her.

Ethan looked down at Claire, a look of profound admiration shining in his eyes. He leaned down, pressing his lips gently against her temple.

May you like

""You handled that better than I would have,"" he whispered.

""I learned from the best,"" Claire smiled, resting her hand flat against his tuxedo chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat.
