Chapter 4 - The Audit Begins

""Where did you get that invoice?"" Vanessa demanded, her voice cracking as she struggled to maintain her icy facade. ""That is an internal procurement draft! It hasn't been verified by legal!""

""It was verified by me,"" Ethan said quietly. He didn't raise his voice this time. The quietness made it infinitely more terrifying. ""At six o'clock this morning, when I pulled the offshore filings for V&C Logistics. It’s an LLC registered under a blind trust in Wilmington. Do you want to tell the board whose signature is on the corporate charter, Vanessa? Or should I project the PDF on the wall behind us?""

A collective intake of breath swept through the directors. One of the senior partners, a gray-haired man who had funded Caldwell Urban Works since its founding, slammed his palm onto the walnut table.

""What is the meaning of this, Vanessa?"" he barked. ""Are you skimming twenty-five percent off our steel allocation through an undisclosed shell company?""

""It’s a standard management fee for regional coordination!"" Vanessa hissed, her composure completely shattering. She glared at Claire with raw, unadulterated hatred. ""And this—this nobody who spends four months sitting on her hands at home while the rest of us keep this company afloat—has no right to audit my department!""

""She didn't audit your department,"" Ethan said, standing up. He towered over the head of the table, his presence commanding total dominion over the room. ""I did. Claire merely confirmed the technical incompetence you were using to camouflage your theft. You assumed because our mother gave you twenty percent of the non-voting family shares, you were untouchable. You assumed that by bullying the staff, by freezing out anyone who showed real competence, you could turn Caldwell Urban Works into your private slush fund.""

Ethan turned to Claire. His expression softened for a fraction of a second, an unspoken message of gratitude flashing in his eyes before he turned back to the room.

""As of twelve-fifteen today,"" Ethan announced, ""the board of directors has convened an emergency executive committee. Vanessa Caldwell is suspended immediately from her position as Vice President of Human Resources and Operations, pending a forensic financial audit.""

""You can't suspend me!"" Vanessa shrieked, standing up so violently her chair screeched against the floorboards. ""I am your sister! I am a Caldwell! Mother will disown you for this!""

""Mother gave me full voting authority when she retired to Florida,"" Ethan replied, cold as granite. ""Security is waiting in your office on the fourteenth floor. They have already boxed your personal items. And unlike Claire Bennett, whose desk you moved next to a trash can while she was nursing a sick parent, you won't be allowed to walk the halls to say goodbye. Evelyn, call building security up.""

Two burly security guards in dark suits stepped through the boardroom doors, as if on cue. They stood flanking Vanessa, their faces stone-cold.

""Ms. Caldwell, please step this way,"" the lead guard said quietly.

Vanessa shook with rage. She grabbed her designer leather briefcase, her manicured nails digging into the leather so hard they turned white. She locked eyes with Claire, trembling with humiliation.

""You think you won?"" Vanessa sneered, leaning over the table toward Claire. ""You’re an employee. A disposable, salaried peasant. When Ethan gets bored of playing your champion, you’ll be out on the street with nothing. You think he actually cares about you? You’re just a tool to cut me out!""

""That’s enough,"" Ethan commanded, his voice dropping an octave. ""Remove her.""

The guards escorted Vanessa out of the boardroom. The heavy doors clicked shut behind them, leaving the remaining executives sitting in stunned, breathless silence.

Ethan turned to the board. ""The South Loop project budget will be restructured immediately under Claire Bennett’s supervision. She is being promoted to Interim Director of Capital Allocations, reporting directly to me. Meeting adjourned.""

The directors hurriedly gathered their files, nodding respectfully—and somewhat nervously—at Claire as they filed out of the room. Within minutes, only Ethan and Claire remained.

Claire sat frozen, her hands resting flat against the leather portfolio. The sheer speed of the corporate earthquake made her head spin.

""Ethan..."" she began, her voice barely a whisper. ""I didn't... I had no idea about the shell company. I just saw the math was wrong.""

Ethan walked over to where she sat. He pulled out the chair next to her and sat down, leaning his forearms on the table.

""I know,"" he said softly, looking at her with an intensity that made her pulse quicken. ""That’s why I needed you back. I’ve suspected Vanessa for six months, but she controlled HR and compliance. She choked out every whistleblower. She made everyone terrified of losing their jobs. When you left for your mother's surgery, she saw an opportunity to push you out completely because she knew you were the only one smart enough to spot the numbers.""

May you like

He reached out, his hand hesitating for a moment before gently covering hers on the table. His skin was warm, his touch steady.

""I'm sorry, Claire. I'm sorry you had to walk into that cafeteria today and feel alone. You will never, ever have to look for a seat in this company again.""
